It’s just yet another stoner/doom band with a reference to smokable herbs in the name… or is it? You’d be forgiven for thinking that Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard are simply another run-of-the-mill band with the same ridiculously down-tuned guitars and distorted bass. It’s a bit of a silly name, and the band seems to be fully aware of it when they say that “All band names are stupid”, but the band’s upcoming album confirms that they are more than just another doom metal band with a silly name.
Yn Ol I Annwn (Welsh for ‘Return To The Underworld’) is the third LP being released by the band and completes the trilogy started with Noeth Ac Anoeth back in 2015 and carried on with Y Proffwyd Dwyll in 2017. The different influences from each of the band members become clearer and get used to a greater extent than before to create an album that stands out from what is currently out there in the scene. From folk, sci-fi and atmospheric movie soundtracks, all these sonorities come together nicely to create an album that sounds massive.
The album opens up with a track that reminds me of Stranger Things’ opening theme, and then it completely changes its tune to a sci-fi epic with more traditional doom metal elements. Other tracks make use of cello, synths and other different types of instruments to create different moods that make them sound completely distinguishable from each other. Jess Ball’s vocals are sweet and calm and yet dark and eerie at the same time, and they sit on top of the melodies perfectly.
While the album’s uniqueness is not enough to make it genre-defining, it certainly doesn’t need to be. It’s an excellent album in its own right and should please different types of heavy music lovers.
The album will be released by New Heavy Sounds on CD, digital download and limited edition double vinyl. The first pressings will be available in a gatefold sleeve and will include a digital download.
Yn Ol I Annwn is out on March 1st.
