Review: Sea In The Sky – Everything All at Once

Alternative rock group Sea in the Sky have finally released their first full debut album and as a new listener I can only say that these guys have really filled a hole for me. Unfortunately, this review is post album release (29/09/17), but I feel the need to really bring some attention to the band. Alternative rock fans will really enjoy some very unique songwriting. Not to mention some incredible album art, which the deep-rooted space and art nerd in me fell in love with almost immediately.

For those who haven’t heard of Sea in the Sky let me quickly fill you in a bit regarding them. Hailing from a self-described quieter region of Cali’s bay area, the quintet began realising their niche with their second EP Serenity, playing with nuances of jazz and funk into some solid progressive metal garnering respect from some more noteworthy publications. For those who haven’t blessed their ears with Serenity here’s a YouTube link.

If you haven’t already checked out their Facebook page too you won’t be disappointed. These guys are really active and you can really see a bunch of close friends with a real passion for their music and this lends itself well to connecting with their banging tunes. Fans all clearly agree, this lot are a hoot to keep up to date on.

Their popularity hasn’t led to any ego trips though, on Facebook declaring that they’re “Just trying to play some heavy and groovy instrumental music.” As a new listener, it’s easy to connect with their laid-back nature and I’ve found myself quietly nodding along to a line-up of their excellently written music to and from work.

Every one of their songs/instrumentals is clearly defined throughout and there’s an aspect for everyone: I’d go as far as to say, everyone, even their mums, could take something really positive from it. It has a somewhat non-aggressive rhythm and tone.

“Everything All At Once”, their leading song, has won me over with its easy vocals and solid instrumentals, the lyrics themselves touched me in a way and keep me coming back for more.

If I was to criticise the music itself, my only bugbear has been having to fiddle a little with my EQ to boost the vocals over the instruments. This could be down to my setup or hearing being less than adequate but if you do encounter similar problems adding just a bit of treble really clears it up. As a bass freak, this hurts a little initially but it’s well worth the effort. The vocals I struggle to compare with others and I’ve just fallen in love with them.
