Review: Auction For The Promise Club – Silence

Auction for the Promise Club are an indie rock band from the Southwest. The band are Zoe White Chambers (singer/guitarist), Toby White Chambers (drums) and Perran Tremewan (guitars/keys). They’ve played live across the country, taking in festivals like Bestival, Boardmasters, Y Not, Lodestar, Leopallooza and the Olympic Park during London 2012.

They’ve been gaining support on BBC 6Music, NME Radio, XFM, Absolute and Amazing Radio. Silence, their debut full length record, was recorded at Airfield Studios with Paul Reeve (Muse, Beta Band, Supergrass).

The record begins with “Silence”, reminiscent of London rockers Revere, with an intriguing instrumental intro. “See Through” has a catchy alternative feel. Toby White-Chambers’ beat on the drums is infectious, it gets the Groot twig swaying to the flow. “See-Through” was released by the band on record store day.

Zoe White-Chambers vocally suits her brother Toby’s drum flow. Guitarist Perran Tremewan makes his guitar work, with ferocious effort that comes across on those riffs. “Time to Breathe” shows Perran’s groove making talent. Their music is thought provoking, their sound, as I said reminds me of Revere. The power of a chord, a beat and a talented vocal can touch the strings of any puppet out there.

There’s so much attitude in highlight track, “Isn’t it Enough”. Its strong drum flow mixes well with Zoe’s bold vocals. This is a regression track, it brings back memories of how L7 ruled the scene for a while. Watch out for “Moonlight”  – you can see the video at the bottom. Hold on to your hat, if you’re wearing one, as it explodes into a fun, full-on rock track.

The start of “Cut So Fine” could be construed as spoken word. Zoe’s voice caresses the enjoyable drum beat, which gets the body movin’… Again, they know how to catch your attention.

Auction for the Promise Club celebrate the release of their debut album Silence (out 9th June!) with a one-off show at the St Mary’s Hall, Appledore, 7pm 30th June. With support from The Black Dogs and another special guest, tickets are £6 adv (£8 door).
