Review: Vederkast – Northern Gothic

Vederkast - Northern GothicNorway’s Verderkast are considered a brand of hard/progressive rock with elements of stoner and heavy metal. Northern Gothic comes across as a very strong record and it seems to elicit a great deal of darkness throughout it’s playing time.

There are only two truly lengthy songs on the album, which could simply summarise the work of the band: expandable “My Burden,” and closing piece “Remain” which is a world for itself, built around different subgenres of the metal genre. Other than that, the songs here are rather short, but they are very well structured and offer a lot, no matter of the playing times, making the record seem like one large soundscape in itself. I will commend these four in their notable experimentation, as this record could have gone the boring route that most stuff goes, but it surprisingly didn’t.

Most fans of progressive music will be very surprised with this album, because it’s different. Highly recommendable.
