It’s that time of year when we are all getting excited about the festival announcements for Download, Bloodstock and many of the others based here in the UK. I have a different plan, while many of you are packing your waterproofs and heading for Download, I will be breaking out my pasty legs in the Costa del sol. Just 25 miles south of Malaga is a place called Fuengirola. The resort has 5 miles of sandy beaches with a plethora of upmarket tapas bars, restaurants, cafes and chic boutiques.
On top of all that, it’s now home to a very impressive new music festival called Rock the Coast on Friday 14th and Saturday 15th June. Friday sees rock giants Scorpions headline what can only be described as line-up of total legends with bands such as Europe, UFO playing an exclusive 50th anniversary show and Nordic phenomenon Tarja. Grindcore pioneers Carcass, Wintersun playing a special 15th anniversary show and Blaze Bayley playing Iron Maiden songs and many more heavyweights. Further down the list we have local up and coming bands such as female fronted melodic death metal band Bloodhunter, deathcore group The Broken Horizon and retro heavy metal from Hitten.
Saturday has an equally strong line up with guitar legend Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow headlining, as well as progressive metal from Opeth and Darkness bringing the British glam to the Spanish resort. Norwegian black metal icons Mayhem, Gothenburg melodic death metal pioneers Dark Tranquillity cater for the extreme metal fan. Saturday provides more great local bands with post-metal group The Holeum, power metal by Taken and Greek themed metalcore From Chaos Before Gea.
