Yeah, those of a certain age will no doubt guess where Byker Grave is held… The Star and Shadow Cinema, Newcastle Upon Tyne plays host to this bevy of heaviness in God’s country (the editor in chief may be biased), and they’ve just announced a bunch of bands playing at this year’s event.
Added to the bill are Brazilian Black-Thrash originators Vulcano, epic doom veterans Solstice and an exclusive performance from Germany’s Chapel of Disease. Joining them are Nemorous, a new five piece band risen from the ashes of UK black metal favourites Wodensthrone, Scottish thrashers Hellripper, Leeds death-metal band Deus Vermin and local instrumental progressive metal 4-piece Altostratus.
Limited early bird weekend tickets are available priced at £22.50 from bykergrave.bigcartel.com. The event takes place on Friday 29th and Saturday 30th November.
Byker Grave Festival started in 2013 as a last minute replacement for the cancelled ‘Northern Darkness’ festival. Since then it has steadily grown and is now in its seventh year. Previous editions have seen exclusive fly-in appearances from cult underground bands like PLF, Fleshpress and The 3rd Attempt alongside some of the best the UK has to offer, including Wodensthrone, Conan, Venom Prison and A Forest of Stars.
Held in a community run cinema and venue space, the festival has a DIY-ethos and this year will see 12 bands across 2 days with longer sets and no clashes. With further additions to the line-up to come, festival-goers can expect the usual mix of death, doom, black and grindcore from the Byker Grave team.
