Witchy French grunge band Pythies mix sensuality and melody with need to riot in new EP ‘Disillusion’

Pythies is a witchy grunge band from Paris (France), created by Lise.L. At the end of 2022, she decided to form a new musical project lead only by women, which included influences of the grunge culture of the 90s (L7, 7 Year Bitch, Babes in Toyland, Hole) and her taste for witchcraft.

In  January 2023 she met, through social media, the drummer Anna B. Void and guitar player Thérèse La Garce who was superseded by Alice Adjutor in June 2024. These three very strong personalities make a fierce alliance : behind the drums Anna brings a bit of craziness and a wild grunge energy, Alice embraces a punk and witchy attitude with noise guitar. Finally, Lise, who writes and composes all the songs, knows how to mix sensuality, melody and intense need to riot.

The singer/bassist Lise.L further tackles themes that were already presents in Pythies’ earlier releases, such as feminism and esoterism but the challenge now is to incorporate some noisy and dissonants sounds in the music, while remaining a little “bitchy”. Bands like Sonic Youth, Hole or The Breeders have influenced this EP.

The name of the EP reflects all kinds of deceptions and disappointments that a young girl who enters adulthood can encounter and experience.

Their first EP, Always Too Much came out in May 2023. The band then toured all over France. In March 2024, they put out their third single, “Eclipse”, which got a massive response with over 20,000 views on Youtube and also got  onto the KEXP playlist. In early April, they put out a cover of the song “Chick Habit”, with UK band The Velvet Hands and played their debut UK gig at a sold out Omeara in London. On June 20, 2024, the band released their latest single “Toy” which will be part of their debut EP scheduled for Sept 20th 2024. The debut EP, comprising 5 tracks, asserts their music and values in the musical grunge scene.

Pythies play The Prince Albert Brighton on August 9th and Signature Brew Haggerston London on the 10th, before touring France and US this fall (west coast) to promote the release of their EP.

“Blondinette” is the first track on the EP, it’s a song that is as provocative as it is catchy. This time, the band decides to confront the audience to the clichés that still very much condemn the blond girls, the “barbies” and the bimbos, who are often depicted as stupid and without any interest.
