Against Me!’s Laura Jane Grace Protests N.C. ‘Bathroom Bill’

Against Me! Laura jane graceLast night Against Me!’s incendiary frontwoman Laura Jane Grace used her band’s concert in Durham, North Carolina to protest the state’s controversial ‘Bathroom Bill’.

The legislation, formally known as House Bill 2, prohibits transgender individuals from using restrooms and locker rooms which do not correspond with the ‘biological sex’ marked on their birth certificates.

While a number of high profile artists, including Bruce Springsteen and Bryan Adams, have decided to boycott North Carolina in protest of the ‘Bathroom Bill’, Grace chose instead to “create an event around the show”.

As fan footage from the gig shows, Grace took out her own birth certificate and set it alight on stage, while remarking “Goodbye gender!”.

Grace publicly came out as a transgender woman in 2012, and has since worked tirelessly to support and raise awareness of challenges faced by transgender people worldwide. Just one of the organisations she’s involved with is the Happy Hippie Foundation, which works with homeless and LGBTQ youth.
