Please sign the petition attached and consider making formal complaints to your MP / council representative if you agree with us here at the Moshville Times that this is a truly bad move. It seems that Glasgow City Council’s “Client” (I would assume someone who’s throwing money at them) wish to close the Glasgow O2 ABC and turn it into student flats.
The actual announcement which details this doesn’t actually state that the existing address is the ABC, but feel free to double-check: 294-330 Sauchiehall Street includes the venue.
An exhibition detailing the plans is being opened at The Clubroom, CCA, 350 Sauchiehall Street from 15:39 – 2:00 on June 10th (Wednesday next week). All are welcome to attend and, if you’re able and wish to voice your displeasure, then this could be a good time to do it.
As music fans in this city, we wholeheartedly oppose the closure of what has become a very popular venue for many people. Sure, they tend to kick you out too early when they have a club night on, but the sound is good, the vibe is superb, it houses the largest rotating glitter ball in Europe – and I got engaged on stage there, so it holds huge personal memories as well.
Let’s not forget that the ABC isn’t just a main hall. There’s the smaller ABC2 which has had some great gigs on over the years, too, thus supporting grass roots music as well.
This is the link for the petition, but don’t forget that there are other avenues of complaint as well. Spread the word! Share this story, share the link, and get as many people as possible to let the council know that we won’t accept the closure of one of the best venues in the city.
