Road to Hella Rock 2024: King Kraken

We’ve been lucky enough to be asked to sponsor the first ever Hella Rock Festival so we thought in the run-up to the big day, we best get to know the bands we’ll be seeing over the course of the day. This time around, it’s the turn of the South Welsh band who have featured on our pages multiple times (and for good reason) – King Kraken!

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We’re spread across South Wales, from Pontypridd to Llanelli.

How long have you been playing together as a band?

The band formed in the summer of 2018.

Where does the name of the band come from?

The band name is the brainchild of our drummer, who’s fascinated with myths, sea creatures, and alliteration.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

The music is essentially modern-ish hard rock, I suppose there is the interesting juxtaposition of metal influences with old school classic rock and blues echoes.

What’s your live show like?

The live show is a mixture of proper musicianship and overwrought posturing, depending on your taste, you will find a spectacle of some kind at a King Kraken gig.

How does it feel to be performing at the first Hella Rock Festival?

We’re really looking forward to the gig, we’ll be fresh from Bloodstock and the studio, so it’ll be good to have a blast.

What sort of setlist can we expect?

The set will predominantly consist of tracks taken from MCLXXX, our debut album. We will probably throw in a few new tracks though, and maybe one or two ancient ones.

Which other band on the bill are you most looking forward to catching?

We’re looking forward to checking out all of the other bands that are there on the day with us.

What are you working on at the moment?

At the moment, we’re very much preoccupied with adding the final bits of spit and polish to our new tracks, ready for the studio.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Back in May, we unleashed a smorgasbord of inflatable Kraken, quite a moment for the audience, and ourselves to be honest!

What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?

There’s nothing quite like a cup of tea backstage, particularly in a polystyrene cup, to get oneself right off the chain pre-gig.
