Massachusetts progressive metalcore giants Within the Ruins have arguably been one of the most unique bands in all of the ‘core sphere, blending raw energy and impressive, arcade-y style guitar riffs and leads seamlessly. The introduction of new vocalist Steve Tinnon was a period of uncertainty for fans, who had long been accustomed to long-time vocalist Tim Goergen’s style. In spite of that, 2020’s complex, dark and personal Black Heart proved that Steve was a force to be reckoned with, ushering in a new era for the mathcore four-piece.
Returning to the formula of arguably their best album of the Tim era, 2014’s Phenomena, fans set their expectations sky-high from the second the band announced a sequel to the album that is bow celebrating its 10th anniversary. Ahead of Phenomena II‘s bombastic release this Friday (August 23rd, reviewed here), we managed to sit down and talk to Steve himself, discussing a wide range of topics, from the evolution of the band since the times of Phenomena, the challenges he faced when initially entering the band, the validity of heavy music as a whole as a medium of emotional expression and the arduous task of presenting a familiar final product and keeping things fresh.
