Road To Bloodstock 2024: Reverent Son

Our regular run-down of as many of the upcoming Bloodstock bands as we can get to talk to us! Reverent Son play the New Blood stage on the Friday…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Hi there!

We Hail from Essex, Sunny Southend and the surrounding low land areas nearby. We call the shores of the Thames river our home.

Where does the name of the band come from?

Well we were not 100% sure, we did a lot of heavy drinking around the time the band name came into being.

I recall that film The Revenant had come out, and a lot of Credence Clearwater Revival was on the record player at the time, so I think it was a blend of both influences. I think the Black Sabbath song “Under the Sun” from the vol4 album was getting played in the back ground.

Probably a mix of those things at 1am in the morning with a splash of booze to muddy the memory.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Well I think our ‘unique’ spin on things is taking that classic ‘nostalgia’ 70s rock sound, then pumping it through the grinder of modern contemporary sound and blending it all together. Chop all the bits you love from the older rock bands and the great bits from music benign made now.

Metal and Roll we call it!

Basically, go back in time to a Thin Lizzy or Blue Oyster Cult rehearsal and give them modern amps and guitars. I mean Sabbath did it all, so we’re all really just ripping them off in the newest way we can with the best technology we have.

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

Well we’re a live first and foremost. We’ve been trudging it through the trenches working on our live act the last 2 years.

We got a robot evil wizard mascot who comes out, battles a cyclops, we throw Monger dollar bills and most fun of all, Giant inflatable sharks into the crowd when we play Circled by Sharks as our closer.

Bloodstock we will be bringing over 20 sharks but make sure to bring your own pool related inflatables! We don’t waste time on stage, we get up there and we plough that set with non stop riffs and fun, summon our inner early Motorhead and go for it! It’ll be 25 minutes you won’t want back, trust us!

Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?

A few of us have, we’ve loved the more chiller, friendly atmosphere to other festivals. Better stalls, better beer and of course, the best bands! Camping is much safer and calmer.

See a lot of families bringing the younger youth into the heavy metal fold! Start ’em young!

Which M2tM region did you win, or did you come through other channels?

We won the Essex competition. Was hard fought at the end, that’s for sure! Essex breeds hard-working bands.

Can you put into 10 words or fewer how it felt when you realised you were heading to Bloodstock?

A surreal realisation that our hard work had paid off.

What sort of setlist can we expect?

You can expect a mix of Sabre tooth battling cave men. Ray Harryhausen and 70s movies blended into fast paced riff heavy songs. No love songs here, just pure rule of cool songs.

Stage times haven’t been announced yet, so which other band do you most hope you’re not clashing with so you can see them play?

Green Lung!

They where the band that when we met them on the woodland rites tour in Camden, they gave us lots of their time and basically gave us the 10 commandments of how to navigate being a working band, so its an honour to have taken that knowledge and actually be on the same festival and day as them!

Also Clutch and Opeth of course!

What are you working on at the moment?

We’re just adding the final tracking on our first album, its had a few setbacks, we’ve just been playing so much the last year and a half we needed to stop and get the thing recorded. We’ve played these songs so much we just need to get them on vinyl.

We’ve got the newer stuff we want to start adding to the sets so will be good to give these songs the airplay on socials properly whilst the new stuff gets thrown in.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

That’s a good question!

I think almost setting fire to the stage with an amp attenuator. Our lead guitar player almost took a crowd member out with the giant inflatable shark at one of our early shows. Or watching the crowd at our M2TM almost break all the light bulbs trying to ride the inflatable shark.

Those inflatables can get us in so much trouble!

What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?

Usually our go-to is Guinness or a hardy ale, but if we’re driving then a Red Bull (or non-alcoholic Ghost Ship) does the trick.
