Road To Bloodstock 2024: Biomechanimal

Our regular run-down of as many of the upcoming Bloodstock bands as we can get to talk to us! Biomechanimal play the New Blood stage on the Saturday…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Biomechanimal was technically formed in Southampton, but we’re much more comfortable saying we’re from London. We have members from Italy, Lithuania, and the US, as well as the UK!

How long have you been playing together as a band?

As a project? Over 10 years. In this current format, I reckon about 4 years.

Where does the name of the band come from?

Great question. I love the work of HR Giger, science fiction media, stuff like that, and we wanted a name that reflected that. I eventually settled on Biomechanimal.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Biomechanimal is different to most bands, in that it’s both my music project AND a full band. We write together, I write stuff on my own, and it all gets released under the same banner. This means we hop genre a lot, take influence from whatever we like, and are not limited by scene or scope. This means that the music can have a very wild, unrestrained quality to it, but we still hold everything to our very high production standards. We tentatively describe this as ‘Electronic Metal’, but really, it’s crossed a lot of stuff. Industrial, EDM, black metal, djent, orchestral (Matt has an orchestral background), hardcore (both kinds)… whatever we want really. It’s liberating.

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

Our live show tends to get altered based on the type of show we’ve been booked for. Industrial show? We’ll break out some of the clubbier 44 stuff. Metal show? You know it’s going to have blastbeats. But above all, it will be energetic, and it will be live. You go to see a band to actually see a band, see a live show, and that’s what you’re going to get. Raw force.

Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?

Another great question. Bloodstock 2010 was actually my very first festival, back when I was 16. I love extreme metal, remember seeing Gorgoroth, Bloodbath, Behemoth, and being incredibly touched by Mikael Åkerfeldt’s tribute to Dio, who had died that year and was meant to headline. This, to me, was the soul of metal. Influence upon influence, passed down reverently, but without fear of growing and changing things. Bloodstock showed me this, and I’m very much looking forward to showing Bloodstock what I’ve done with that over the last decade.

Which M2tM region did you win, or did you come through other channels?

Nope, was directly booked for New Blood. We have done M2tM a few times and won a few heats, but understandably the competition is FIERCE here in London, y’all work crazy hard!

Can you put into 10 words or fewer how it felt when you realised you were heading to Bloodstock?

FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK

You get the idea.

What sort of setlist can we expect?

As I alluded to before, we’ve tailored this set to our metal fans. Expect our heaviest, most railbreaking songs. We’ve even written something just for BOA…stay tuned on that…

Stage times haven’t been announced yet, so which other band do you most hope you’re not clashing with so you can see them play?

We’re playing Saturday, really want to try and catch Mimi Barks if we can. We played with them at Resistanz Festival in Sheffield, really cool shit. I’m super into this SCARLXRD, Bambi Thug stuff.

What are you working on at the moment?

We’ve been trying to finish the second album for a year or so. It’s basically done, just need time to wrap post production really. The problem is that our live show prep takes precedence, but after this we have a month or so, so we’ll try and get it finished.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Lol, keeping this PG…

In our recent show in the US, the festival had a big speaker stack on either side of the stage. I love to climb stuff, so I hopped up there, only to realise the entire thing was just balanced, not strapped down. So there’s me, getting the crowd bouncing while also desperately trying to balance on these wobbling fuckin’ speakers, while also not look like I’m about to eat shit. I jump off, all fine, but apparently literally right after our set the entire thing fell over. Miracle nobody got hurt. So yeah, sorry about that DFF crew, but please bolt your shit down in future!

What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?

Ah man, its got to be the Jagerbomb right? We have this dumb ritual where we all neck a jagerbomb before going on stage and shout ‘Skål’. It’s all very silly, and when we were doing this on our Finland tour we looked like fucking idiots because they don’t even really say that there (Kippis!). But it’s our thing!
