We’ve been lucky enough to be asked to sponsor the first ever Hella Rock Festival so we thought in the run-up to the big day, we best get to know the bands we’ll be seeing over the course of the day. And now it’s time to meet the band kicking the day off – The Black Shucks!
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
We’re born and bred Norfolk. However I will confirm we all have the correct amount of fingers and toes (I think).
How long have you been playing together as a band?
2 years properly! We’ve been messing around together for about 4 years in total.
Where does the name of the band come from?
The name comes from the legendary folklore black dog which is said to roam East Anglia. A large black dog with red eyes know as the black shuck!
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
We’ve spent a while defining our sound into what it is today. We’re 4 guys who all have different inspirations from Guns N’ Roses to RHCP to country.

What’s your live show like?
Marshalls turned up to 11, thundering bass lines and hard hitting drums with powerful vocals. We give it our all playing live and try to give an electrifying performance every time.
Why are people going to watch you rather than hanging at the bar or grabbing some merch?
Well, I think as we’re opening the festival and given that people have had time to listen to our music, they’ll be keen for us to open up the festival with a bang! Trust us we will!
How does it feel to be performing at the first Hella Rock Festival?
Amazing! Very excited to have the opportunity to open it up. It’s actually our first gig outside of Norfolk so we’re super excited to share our music with fellow rock fans and we hope to make some more in the process!
What sort of setlist can we expect?
We’re going to use our time the best we can and perform an attention grabbing set getting everyone in the mood for an evening of rock and roll! We will be going hard from start to finish with even a ballad in there!
Which other band on the bill are you most looking forward to catching?
To be honest we’re super excited that we fully get to enjoy every band after our set. We’ve never met or seen/heard any of them before so exciting times!
What are you working on at the moment?
A debut album due out April!
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
A big hairy biker holding up a sex toy at a bike rally. A tradition that allowed him to have free booze and food all weekend if it was found in its hidden place.
What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?
Jack and coke of course, nothing else comes close! Warms up the vocals and gets us in the right mood! Gotta keep the drummer away from Stella he goes a bit crazy!
