Road to Bloodstock 2023: Overthrone

Our regular run-down of as many of the upcoming Bloodstock bands as we can get to talk to us! Overthone play the Sophie Lancaster stage on the Sunday…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We used to say we were from Birmingham but as time has gone on, and the line up has changed, we have band members from various parts of the country, so we’ll just say we’re from England!

How long have you been playing together as a band?

We formed towards the end of 2017 but have been performing as our current line up since September 2022.

Where does the name of the band come from?

Not Urban Dictionary, that’s for sure…

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

It’s heavy but thought provoking. It’s hopefully inspiring but occasionally straight up angry and filled with bad advice. It’s everything we think and feel poured out onto paper and put to music. We’re lovers of dirty riffs, technical patterns, and big breakdowns but are also suckers for catchy melodies and a good singalong. The thing that makes us unique is probably the eclectic mix of the music that influences us and the way our tastes have evolved over the years. We’re all fans of music, not just fans of metal, so we’re always drawing inspiration from everything you can possibly think of.

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

High energy from start to finish! We thrive off of playing our music live which I think comes across if you’ve ever watched us on stage. But if you haven’t, and you’re looking for something to get your blood pumping and set you up for the last day of the festival, you know where to find us!

Have you played Bloodstock before? If so, when?

No! But we’re very much looking forward to it and hopefully this will be the first of many!

How/when did you find out that you’d be playing the SOPHIE stage?

It was last September. We actually approached Vicky following a brief conversation on a TikTok video we’d posted. She seemed to like our sound so we thought we’d shoot our shot! We sent over a couple of full songs and live videos for her to check out and she must have enjoyed them, because she offered us a place on the festival the same day!

What sort of setlist can we expect?

A little bit of this… A little bit of that… Hopefully something for everyone. Maybe a new song getting it’s live debut? Definitely a set that gets heavier and heavier!

Which other band do you most hope you’re not clashing with so you can see them play?

We’ll definitely be catching Killswitch Engage, Messuggah, Fit For An Autopsy and Knocked Loose. We also have a load of mates playing the festival and are hoping we can catch them all. Bands like InVisions, Black Coast, Waterlines, The Dead XIII, Voidwalker and Those Once Loyal.

What are you working on at the moment?

We recently released the first single off of our upcoming EP of the same name, ‘Search for Solace’, so right now we’re putting together plans to release the rest of those tracks, as well as touring plans for the rest of the year and next year.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Our former guitarist Rob, who left the band due to family and work commitments, was at one of our shows last year and halfway through the last song of our set, Joe took off his bass, dragged Rob up onto the stage, passed it to him to play, and then jumped into the pit with his mic. It wasn’t exactly wild but it was a great moment, and good to have Rob on stage playing the music with us. We’ve also had Joe and Luke get so into the music that they’ve either stopped playing and got too involved with shouting the lyrics, or given their guitars to members of the crowd and jumped in the pit. We should probably take more care of our instruments…

What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?

We’re on early at Bloodstock so it’s going to be multiple cups of coffee and probably a few too many cans of Monster Energy!
