Road To Bloodstock 2023: MuddiBrooke

Our regular run-down of as many of the upcoming Bloodstock bands as we can get to talk to us! Regulars on our pages, MuddiBrooke play the Jager stage on the Saturday…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We’re all born and living in Derby/Derbyshire.

How long have you been playing together as a band?

We started up officially at the start of 2020, but didn’t play our first gig until mid 2021, due to the dreaded C word (no, not that one). Morgan joined us in Summer 2022.

Where does the name of the band come from?

Before we were a full band, it was just me with an idea of “MuddiBrooke” and an ambition to start a band with that name. The name stems from a whole load of different reasons – my stage makeup is inspired by war paint and becoming a “woman warrior” after a really bad relationship; it has a sort of mud-look about it. This tied in well with bands I liked and was inspired by such as Mudhoney, Mudvayne, Puddle Of Mudd, etc. and with the sort of muddy guitar sound I wanted to achieve. The “Brooke” part is just my middle name, which I now use as my professional name. I was also going for a band name that sounded earthy and nature-y as, at the time, I had imagined a dirty, acoustic, country-rock sort of band; but we evolved into a heavy rock outfit, which I’m very happy about.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We’re a mix of alternative rock, grunge, nu-metal with a slight tinge of country. We work with a wide range of influences from 80s pop with Eurythmics, The Pretenders, Adam Ant – to 90s rock with Pearl Jam, Garbage, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, NIN – to 00s nu-metal and modern day rock like Highly Suspect, Wolf Alice and Deftones.

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

We’ve been told that we are entertaining and encapsulate a crowd. We have a bit of everything, soft-building ballads, to punky, jump-around-party tracks, to harder songs with satisfyingly euphoric, heavy drops and vocal harmonies, with the odd blood-curdling scream. Also, my mum says we’re cool.

Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?

No, I’ve never been, but being local, I’ve heard a lot about it. We’re really looking forward to it!

When/how did you find out you’d been selected to play at Bloodstock?

We applied to play every year since we started in 2020 – but it was great to wake up to an email one morning that we had been picked for the Jägermeister stage!

What sort of setlist can we expect?

Explosive.

Which other band do you most hope you’re not clashing with so you can see them play?

I absolutely love In Flames, Killswitch Engage and Ugly Kid Joe, but luckily they’re on different days to us!

What are you working on at the moment?

We’re currently working towards our debut album, which we are planning to release at some point in 2024. In the meantime, we have a handful of new singles waiting to be released very soon.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

I once accidentally headbutted someone and broke their nose at a show, while I was mid-headbanging. That was messy.

What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?

I’m boring before a gig. I always drink water and pineapple juice (very good for the vocals). But after, get me a pint of lager and I’ll be a happy gal.
