Our regular run-down of as many of the upcoming Bloodstock bands as we can get to talk to us! Dystopian Sun play the New Blood stage on the Sunday…
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
Members are dotted all over Northwest Wales but we consider our home town to be Bangor, North Wales.
How long have you been playing together as a band?
As the current lineup of members, since late 2020 but the band has been a project since 2018.
Where does the name of the band come from?
The band used to operate under a different name, but we decided to change it as we didn’t think it fitted with the bands sound. After a brainstorming session we settled on Dystopian Sun with the idea that even when something is broken and in disrepair that there is an upside, a light at the end of the tunnel type situation. In a dystopian world the sun will illuminate all.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
We all tend to agree that we fit somewhere within the deathcore genre, but we also throw in a healthy mix of death metal, metalcore and heavy rock amongst our varied discographies. A nice balance of fast and aggressive with slow and brutal breakdowns accompanied by some catchy, bouncy riffs. That’s what makes us unique, one song will have the crowd killing each other in the pit like “Tormentor”, another will have people crying and holding each other like “Worthless”.
What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?
We are mainly a deathcore band, but we do have a varied discography with songs that would fall into the death metal, Metalcore & Heavy Rock categories. We play every show like it is our last. The people watching us at Bloodstock can expect a high-energy, eclectic display from 5 guys doing what they do best, throwing down some hard-hitting heavy riffs with monstrous drums and insane lead lines with vocals so demonic you will think you have arrived at the gates of hell to greet the devil himself.
Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?
We’ve never been to Bloodstock before so to have our first time be playing a stage there is insane to us.
Which M2tM region did you win, or did you come through other channels?
We won the North Wales region against some insanely talented bands.
Can you put into 10 words or fewer how it felt when you realised you were heading to Bloodstock?
We felt every emotion all at once, it was amazing.

What sort of setlist can we expect?
For Bloodstock it will be the best we have to offer so far, a nice mix of heavy and bouncy to cater to everyone’s metal tastes.
Which other bands do you most hope you’re not squished up next to so you can see them play?
We’re playing on the Sunday so we would hate to miss Decapitated & Sepultura on the R.J.D Stage and Embodyment, InVisions & Overthrone on the Sophie Lancaster stage.
What are you working on at the moment?
We have some new material in the works that will come about later this year. Other than that, we will be looking to book out our calendar next year with shows.
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
We had a guy turn up at one of our shows and after our set he came over to give us his opinion of the performance. He asked to buy a sticker from our merch table and then preceded to tell us he was going to stick it to his leg and make a tapestry out of the stickers of bands he enjoyed watching. We sort of stood there thinking “Okay this guy’s a little weird for putting stickers on his legs but if it makes him happy…” only to look down and see one of his legs were missing and in its place was a carbon fibre prosthetic that he took off for us to place the sticker onto, we couldn’t help but laugh, he was hilarious and came to a few more shows too!
What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?
We aren’t really a big drinking band so its mostly water and Pepsi before we go on. After the show we may have a couple of Budweisers, rum or whisky except for Reece (rhythm guitar) and Rhys (drums) who never drink alcohol.
