It’s that time of year where we set out to interview as many of the Sophie, New Blood, and Jager bands as we can in the lead-up to one of the most anticipated festivals of the year, Bloodstock. Answering our questions here are Party Cannon who are playing the Sophie stage on Saturday…
Simple things first–where are you guys from?
Dunfermline, Scotland. Possibly the least metal place in the UK.
How long have you been playing together as a band?
The current line-up has been together since 2014, but the band itself started in 2010 and has been through various line-up changes. If my maths is correct, we’ve had over 13 members.
Where does the name of the band come from?
We named ourselves after a giant party popper known as a ‘party cannon’. They function similarly to a party popper but expel a much higher quantity of confetti.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
Brutal slamming death metal mixed with goregrind. IQ-lowering guttural noise, moronic hench sickness. If Devourment and Hemdale had a severely troubled offspring together. Music that appeals to the reptilian part of your brain that craves breakdowns and pure nonsense. Our sound is not unique in the slightest, however, as far as the BOA line-up goes we definitely stand out as being the representative for that style and we really appreciate a festival of this size taking a chance on a band like us.

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?
Energetic and cathartic. Full of inflatables and push-ups. I can’t tell you why people might choose us over another band as every band on the lineup is solid, but if they do decide to watch our set then I can promise an environment that encourages you to vent your inner madness in a freeing and fun way.
Have you played Bloodstock before? If so, when?
This will be our first time playing as well as attending. Usually, we are on tour or playing some smaller EU fests around this time so we’ve not been able to make BOA until now. I’m just as hyped to attend the fest as I am to play it, I have heard nothing but good things and can’t wait to watch Cradle Of Filth while setting fire to my pop-up tent.
How/when did you find out that you’d be playing the SOPHIE stage?
In March we received an email asking if we wanted to play, we replied saying “yes”, and now here we are (playing the fest).
What sort of setlist can we expect?
An ignorant setlist full of slam riffs and frog noises. We’ve kept the setlist as Spotify-friendly as possible. This will be a lot of people’s first exposure to us so while we do have a new album due to be released, we’ve decided to play our most recognisable songs spanning our entire discography.
Which other band do you most hope you’re not clashing with so you can see them play?
We’re actually quite lucky as most of the bands we want to see are either playing the same stage as us or on different days. Hyped to see our guys in Foetal Juice, Colpocleisis, Viscera, Raised By Owls, Venom Prison, Bloodshot Dawn as well as the classics like Napalm Death, Cradle Of Filth, and Judas Priest.

What are you working on at the moment?
Our new album is finished and due out this year on Gore House Productions, more info on that will be announced soon. On top of that, we have more plans for touring – we’re doing a UK mini-tour in July with Crepitation and Twitch Of The Death Nerve which is going to be the first no-restrictions death metal tour in the UK since COVID and so far the Manchester date has sold out which was pretty unexpected but really awesome.
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
When we played Death Feast Open Air in 2018 we had an audience member crowd surf across a sea of over a thousand people on an inflatable killer whale. It went pretty smoothly and he did not end up in a wheelchair after it.
What drink do you throwback to get yourself fired up before going on stage?
Four shots of 80 proof Colgate.
