It’s that time of year where we set out to interview as many of the Sophie, New Blood, and Jager bands as we can in the lead-up to one of the most anticipated festivals of the year, Bloodstock. Answering our questions here (in their usual unique style!) are Hanowar who play the New Blood Stage on Saturday.
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
We met on English ground, in a backstage room we heard the sound!
How long have you been playing together as a band?
Time what is time, an entity difficult to portray in earthly manner that those of you reading this could fathom. Millenia ago gods who’s mere presence would shatter the minds of those unworthy, with names a mortal tongue could not dare to pronounce, we were brought together for our steel!
Where does the name of the band come from?
Within the ancient ruins of the lost temple of Kaz’mok Dah, they lay a long forgotten scroll, said to contain the ancient black geometry thought lost to the eons! Our oracles deciphered these runes after countless years, and lo, the name to bring true metal to the world would be “Hanowar”
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
No other band could even dare to imagine playing riffs as spine crushingly heavy as our true combination of steel and metal.
What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?
Our live show is truer than the truest of the true, pyro pulled straight from the mouth of a dragon, plastic swords of steel mightier than Excalibur II where you have to complete all of FFIX in like, 12 hours, and riffs so powerful the world will know our name!
People will watch us lest they suffer the eternal fate of knowing that they will forever be a wimp, or poser. This thought burning in the back of their minds forever. Thirty years from now, they will wake in the middle of the darkest night in tears! As the fireplace flickers a warming glow, their unborn children rushing into the room to comfort them, “what’s wrong Papa, why do you cry?”. Slowly they will turn to face their child, who looks up to them for guidance through life and for reassurance of the world. They will have to reply whilst stammering through their heavy tears, “Oh greatest child of mine, unbridled bastion of beauty, beholder of purest heart, centre of the cosmos… I am… I am a poser.”
So watch us lest you suffer this eternal damnation!

Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?
We have slain many a poser at these battle grounds, once in 2015 and once again in 2017! But it seems our efforts were not strong enough, that is why this year we are bringing an even greater show of immortal power!
Which M2tM region did you win, or did you come through other channels?
There’s a sound heard across the land, IT’S HEARD ACROSS THE SEA! You’ll only hear it if you listen with your heart, and our hearts are the truest of steel. That sound was the call of Simon! “Your steel is required at Bloodstock”, he proclaimed! So we threw down our tankards, and prepared for battle!
Can you put into 10 words or fewer how it felt when you realised you were heading to Bloodstock?
Steel.
What sort of setlist can we expect?
The truest of the true! A set filled with steel, power, and more steel!
Which other bands do you most hope you’re not squished up next to so you can see them play?
This question is worded incorrectly, I’m sure you meant to ask the other bands “how much do you hope you don’t clash with Hanowar” as all eyes will be on our steel!
