#RoadToBOA2021 – Beyond Extinction

It’s that time of year where we set out to interview as many of the Sophie, New Blood, and Jager bands as we can in the lead-up to one of the most anticipated festivals of the year, Bloodstock. Taking on our questions here are Beyond Extinction who are set to take to the New Blood stage on Friday.

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We’re all from Essex but spread about a bit, I’d say Southend is certainly our band’s hometown though!

How long have you been playing together as a band?

In our current 5-piece form we’ve been playing together since March 2019 when Jude joined the band.

Where does the name of the band come from?

We’d love to have an interesting or funny story behind this, but more or less one day we decided we wanted to pick a name and just shot some ideas around, Zach came up with Beyond Extinction and it was way cooler than any of mine (or the rest of the lads) ideas, so we went with it! I remember we confirmed it while I was sat on the toilet at home, which reflects the not-so-glamourous name creation process quite well!

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We blend the brutality of beatdown, speed of thrash, harshness of deathcore and classic roots of death metal to create what we think is the culmination of all the best sub-genres of heavy music in one. There are definitely many bands we sound like in part but even we struggle to pinpoint any which sound very similar to overall, and we’ve grown to like that!

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

Because it’s all about conviction. We know we aren’t the most famous or most successful band on the lineup by a million years, but we also know we are dedicated and able to provide a top class show more than anyone else because we want to prove ourselves. We’re teenagers playing the UK’s biggest and best metal festival – imagine your feelings to be given the opportunity we have; you’d give it your everything too right?

Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?

Jasper and Niall went in 2019 and I (Jasper) can easily say it was the most welcoming and fun trip of my life. Nothing but amazing vibes and fantastic music on display, and this year is going to be even bigger and even better.

Which M2tM region did you win, or did you come through other channels?

We won Essex’s competition which is very special for us being our home region but also the county which raised us. The Essex scene is the reason we are here today and they welcomed us with open arms and love from day 1, we are so proud to represent every one of those amazing people at the festival this year.

Can you put into 10 words or fewer how it felt when you realised you were heading to Bloodstock?

I got asked to leave Waitrose because I was screaming. That’s 10 words, right? Pretty much sums up the emotions.

What sort of setlist can we expect?

Basically, a non-stop audio assault of some of the heaviest music and fattest breakdowns at the festival – and that’s a Beyond Extinction promise! Our new EP, The Fatal Flaws Of Humankind, in full along with our latest single “Parasitic” and some awesome eerie interludes and ambient tracks will make up the set.

Which other bands do you most hope you’re not squished up next to so you can see them play?

Tough question! My (Jasper) top 5 are Godeater, Loathe, Viscera, Bleed from Within and Black Tongue!

What are you working on at the moment?

A lot of stuff… tours, new music, plans for another EP…. You’ll have to keep your eyes peeled on our social pages to see!

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

We played with Cancer Bats in 2019 and got a shoutout onstage in front of a nearly sold out venue in our hometown from their vocalist, Liam, which was crazy, but I’d say when I saw parkway Drive play at Ally Pally and they entered by marching with torch wielding robed dudes through the entire crowd of 10 thousand people – that was sick.

What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?

A nice big cup of herbal tea – look after your vocal cords people! (My post-stage drink of choice will always be a pint of Moretti though!)
