It’s that time of year where we set out to interview as many of the Sophie, New Blood, and Jager bands as we can in the lead-up to one of the most anticipated festivals of the year, Bloodstock. Answering our questions here are Godeater who play the New Blood Stage on Thursday. Thanks to Ross Beagan (guitar) for doing all the question-answering!
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
We’re based in Glasgow, Scotland! Most of us are from the Central Belt and Tim is from Bournemouth – the complete opposite end of the UK!
How long have you been playing together as a band?
We originally formed in 2016 and Tim joined officially in 2019.
Where does the name of the band come from?
I believe it comes from the Dark Souls series but I remember us having a big list of names and this was the one that stuck the most at the time.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
It’s death metal but I think one of the most unique elements of Godeater is how varied the music itself actually is. I try to draw influence from loads of different styles of metal and other genres of music and apply them in the context of death metal. That’s not necessarily unique, strictly speaking, but it means that there really is something for everybody to listen to and enjoy!
What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?
Our live show has changed quite a lot over the past few years, especially since we started touring. The style of music we play isn’t really well renowned for having an energetic live show so we try to challenge that and bring a more active and captivating performance!

Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?
Our bassist Will went in 2012 and had a killer time – good weather and good vibes! He saw a bunch of cool bands like Dimmu Borgir, Nile, Behemoth and the Black Dahlia Murder but the real highlight was Machine Head’s set to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of their first ever live show!
Which M2tM region did you win, or did you come through other channels?
Bloodstock got in touch with our booking agent to see if we would be interested in playing!
Can you put into 10 words or fewer how it felt when you realised you were heading to Bloodstock?
In a word – “Excited!”
What sort of setlist can we expect?
We’ll be playing You Are No Exception and A Pale Shadow live for the first time! We’ve never even been able to play them in a room together due to lockdowns and restrictions, so it’s exciting to get to play them together and for other people. Apart from that, we’ll play a couple of songs from All Flesh Is Grass and we might dig out an older song or two as well!
Which other bands do you most hope you’re not squished up next to so you can see them play?
There are loads of killer bands on the bill but my top picks are Urne, Viscera, Conjurer, Sylosis, Cradle of Filth and Judas Priest! We’re playing on the Thursday so I think the only potential clash I have is Urne – hopefully I can catch them though!
What are you working on at the moment?
We are working on a new album! I’ve been writing for it since before All Flesh Is Grass was released in 2019 so it has been a fairly long process but I’ve focussed on it almost exclusively over the past year and it’s coming together pretty quickly at this point.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
Josh heat-butted me into a drum kit at the end of our set once, that’s about as wild as it has ever gotten for us I’m afraid!
