It’s that time of year where we set out to interview as many of the Sophie, New Blood, and Jager bands as we can in the lead-up to one of the most anticipated festivals of the year, Bloodstock. Answering our questions here are Broken Jaw who play the New Blood Stage on Friday.
We are all based in Gloucestershire.
How long have you been playing together as a band?
We’ve been playing together since 2019.
Where does the name of the band come from?
Nutzie (frontman) came up with the name in 2012 (when the band first started) because he had his jaw bust when he was younger. He’s got a fair number of scars.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
We are pure unadulterated Punk Metal. We are adrenaline fuelled, tenacious, loud, ferocious, energetic and rowdy! Our sound is unique because the band members all have a broad spectrum of musical influences, spanning the many different ages of the band members. We are honest and play for us.
What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?
As previously stated, it’s up there with the most energetic, adrenaline fuelled, rowdy and fun shows you’ll see! We aren’t like your run of the mill, stand there and look broody while playing band. We will get you involved and headbanging or singing along with us. Seems as your enjoyment is our enjoyment and the passion we exude is infectious and it will grab you.
Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?
Some of us have and the ones who have, have loved it and gone back almost every year. Those who haven’t, want to and it’s an incredible honour and experience to be playing there for their first visit.
Which M2tM region did you win, or did you come through other channels?
We didn’t compete to play. We were booked through our management and booking agency, The Oracle Management and TKO Bookings.
The Oracle Management owned and run by the lovely and awesome Fafara family (Dez, Anahstasia and Kaleb) and our hard-working TKO booking agent, Ian Shaw.
Can you put into 10 words or fewer how it felt when you realised you were heading to Bloodstock?
Excited, proud, overjoyed, eager, enthusiastic, Infused, emotional, pensive, seen and ultimately, happy.
What sort of setlist can we expect?
One where we hope you brought your energy too. It’s gonna be a pit inducing, moshfest with something familiar but like you’ve never heard before, added in the mix just to help if you’re starting to get tired and waver.
Which other bands do you most hope you’re not squished up next to so you can see them play?
So many that you may as well add the poster but this is in no particular order:
- Cradle of Filth
- Judas Priest
- Napalm Death
- Evil Scarecrow
- Devin Townsend
- While She Sleeps
- Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons
- Mother Vulture
- Bleed From Within
- Raised By Owls
- Venom Prison
- Foetal Juice
- Acid Reign
- Black Tongue
- Party Cannon
- Raging Speedhorn
- Ashen Crown
- The Injester
What are you working on at the moment?
Currently, we are concentrating on the set but prior to that, we were working on our 2nd album which is sounding just as mental as the first, if not more so and that’s not even out yet.
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
Um…there’s been a fair few mind. I personally have had breast milk squirted at me from the woman’s breast, without me knowing and she got some crazy distance on it to get me on stage mind, fair play to her. I’ve also seen human pyramids appear in the crowd, people rowing, someone giving me a joint while I’m mid song. I’ve seen people fucking, I’ve gone for a piss while still doing vocals, the list literally goes on and on (laughing). The boys have their own stories also but we are more about looking forward to making new wild memories which are just as crazy.
What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?
Could be anything from cider, lager, Fireball, Kraken, Captain Morgan’s, a Kentucky Cherry (Jim Beam Black, Cherry Sourz and Lemonade), Monster, water? List goes on.
