#RoadToWacken – Myrath

With Wacken XXX looming up to stomp its big metal footprint on Germany again this summer, we’re taking a look at a bunch of the bands who are hitting its iconic stages for the first time. Today we have a band who mix heavy metal with middle- and far-eastern influences. Enjoy a few words from Myrath!

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Pretty easy – we’re from Tunisia but Myrath members live in 3 countries which are Tunisia, France and Georgia.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

The band’s name means Legacy which we used to name our previous album. As you can hear it pretty much everywhere in our songs, we use a lot of Oriental/Tunisian sonorities mixed with Occidental metal, so Myrath is a way to pay a tribute to our origins, and to make the world discover a lil bit of our culture.

Describe your music. Who are your musical influences?

Our music is called “blazing desert metal”. We do a mix between metal, alternative music, prog, Andaluz and Berber music. We have a lot of influences, and we still can’t choose! That’s why we needed to define this new music genre.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

We don’t really have a main one, we just try to send something positive although we often speak about things that are sad, that hurt us, that are not right at all. We just want people who listen to our albums to feel good when it’s done, just like we want our fans to be happy during our shows. That’s the main energy we try to give.

Of course, regarding the song “Dance” – it’s about a Syrian dancer who was threatened with death by Isis because he was a dancer. It’s an incredible story.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

We propose a unique experience, with real magic on stage (I mean real magical tricks, big illusions), fire and belly dancers. We need to propose more than just music today. We created a world with our two onirical videos clips, so our aim is to share this experience on stage with the crowd.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

I don’t really know if it’s wild, but recording our DVD in front of our Tunisian fans in an antique theatre was something for us. Now we did some crazy shows with the Legacy album in front of I don’t know how many thousands of people and that’s always something big for us for sure

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

Well mainly our new album Shehili, the first and smallest part of the tour, we’ll play at Sweden Rock Fest in few days, then Wacken, Tunisia, Japan, and a dozen of countries in Europe in November. We’re also working on releasing our first DVD this year. We’re quite busy which is really good.

What are you most looking forward to at Wacken this year?

This is the first time we will have played at W.O.A. so we’re really excited about that, and can’t wait to see our fans there. It’s said it’s the biggest and coolest place on earth, so we wanna see that with our own eyes!
