#RoadToMetalDays2018 – Firtan

Always aiming to put the smaller / less well known bands front and centre, welcome to our series featuring acts on the New Forces stage at this year’s Metal Days festival in Slovenia, as well as a couple of bands who are being featured for a second time having trodden the boards of that stage in earlier years. We’ll be there with them and hopefully will catch as many of them live as possible so we can tell you how good they are! Tickets for the five-day (plus warmup!) event are still available for around £135. It takes place in Tolmin, Slovenia, from July 21st to 28th.

What is your band’s name and where are you from?

Hi, we are Firtan from the Black Forest area in Southern Germany. Our musical style originates from black metal involving atmospheric and progressive elements alongside intense vocal performances and accentuating ambient sounds.

When did you first find out about Metal Days?

I got to know about MetalDays when it was still called MetalCamp and visited MetalDays for the first time in 2016 as a guest.

How did you end up on the bill for this year’s festival?

On my first visit in 2016 I left an application for a show at the festival and we got booked the year after to play the new “New Forces Stage” as a co-headliner on one of the days. Following that show we got the opportunity to open the Mainstage this year on Thursday where we will present our new album “Okeanos” which will be released the week before MetalDays!

Is this the furthest you’ll ever have played from home and/or the biggest gig you’ve ever played? If so, what was the furthest/biggest before now?

We’ve played quite some shows really far away in the past… for example a small tour in Romania which took us a 24 hours drive to get to the first show! Beside that there were shows in the UK, Czech Republic, the Netherlands and many other European countries, but Metaldays is definitely one of the further away shows! Regarding size, the German Summer Breeze Festival was probably our “biggest” show up to now. MetalDays 2018 will hopefully end up on one of the top ranks also. Let’s see how many will be there!

Which bands on the bill are you most looking forward to seeing?

Well, this year’s lineup is really strong! I’m looking forward to see Igorrr, Judas Priest, Behemoth and Virvum to name a few.

Other than bands, what are you most looking forward to about Metal Days?

The location is insane. Looking forward to enjoying the nature and the Soca again this year. I really like hanging out there in the river and meeting friends from all around Europe. The river and the nature in general are what makes MetalDays unique besides the great food and everything around the festival. Glad to be there again!

Before you hit the stage: Monster energy drink or Laško beer?

I’d go for the beer!

We’ll see you there!

Thanks for the short interview! We’ll have our new album Okeanos out just in time for MetalDays on July, 13th worldwide through AOP Records. You can already check out two new songs on Youtube – “Seegang” and “Tag Verweil“. Also, we’ll have an exclusive UK appearance on this year’s Warhorns Festival in Yorkshire on September 22nd! Don’t miss this date if you’re around!
