As ever, we’re going to try and cover every single Jäger, New Blood and SOPHIE stage band before Bloodstock kicks off on August 9th. Your chance to check them out and start planning which bands to get there early for!
Trust us when we tell you that this is bound to result in some frustrating clashes because, as ever, there are some great bands on these three stages.
Our thanks to all the bands for taking the time out to answer our questions!
Act of Defiance – Sophie Lancaster Stage, Sunday
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
Act of Defiance is from a few different states in the U.S. Both Henry and myself (Chris) are from Los Angeles, California Shawn is from Atlanta, Georgia and Matt is from Southampton, Massachusetts.
How long have you been playing together as a band?
Since the beginning of 2015, however we’ve all come from bands that are known in the metal world Shawn and myself are prior members of Megadeth, Matt is from Shadows Fall, and Henry is from Scar the Martyr.
Where does the name of the band come from?
It was really Shawn and I liking the term Defiance but thinking that that was too plain so we wanted to add something more to it that was more descriptive.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
I think what makes us unique is the fact that we don’t care if we’re unique or not. We write what we want to write and that’s the whole reason for this band’s existence the freedom to write and express ourselves the way that we see fit.
What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?
It’s aggressive, in your face, and engaging with the fans to me that’s the biggest thing is having the audience participation in our show.
Have you played Bloodstock before? If so, when?
Yes, Shawn and I played it in 2014 with Megadeth. It was a great time, very rainy but the metal fans came out and were insane!
How/when did you find out that you’d be playing the SOPHIE stage?
We found out from Victoria one of the promoters at Bloodstock. We’ve been talking to them for a couple of years about playing Bloodstock and the time seemed right.
What sort of setlist can we expect?
I’m not sure yet. We will look at the lineup and ascertain as best we can what we think the fans would enjoy the most.
Which other band do you most hope you’re not clashing with so you can see them play?
I would say Judas Priest and Kamelot, but one thing that I really like, is checking out bands that I’ve never heard of before and there are few on this lineup that I will try to see.
What are you working on at the moment?
Touring touring touring! We just want to get out and bring our music to the masses for the moment.
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
This is probably back in the early 2000s but I was playing another Festival overseas in Europe and I decided to stage dive off of an 8-foot high stage with my guitar. Luckily the whole thing turned out okay the crowd was awesome they didn’t mind getting a boot to the face or anything like that and passed me around for a bit.
Jäger, Hobgoblin Ale, Red Bull, Kingstone Press Cider, Kaltenberg Beer or Bulleit Bourbon?
Jäger for sure!
