#RoadToBOA2018 – Def Goldblum

As ever, we’re going to try and cover every single Jäger, New Blood and SOPHIE stage band before Bloodstock kicks off on August 9th. Your chance to check them out and start planning which bands to get there early for!

Trust us when we tell you that this is bound to result in some frustrating clashes because, as ever, there are some great bands on these three stages.

Our thanks to all the bands for taking the time out to answer our questions!

Def Goldblum – Jagermeister Stage, Sunday

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We’re from Nottingham.

How long have you been playing together as a band?

We’ve been playing together for 7 years.

Where does the name of the band come from?

Initially it wasn’t even a band name idea, it was just a play on words that made us all laugh! When we first started playing together it was for a one-off show that we’d agree to collaborate on. Duke01 was a solo rapper and Ming, Stu and Tetris were collectively, a metal band called Cleaverhook. And we needed a band name for the show. Def Goldblum was that name that just wouldn’t go away, so we went with that. We enjoyed playing that first show together so much, that we just decided to keep going, and here we are.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

I’d best describe our sound simply as rap-fronted metal. I think what makes our sound unique is that neither the metal or rap influence is compromised, it is a true clash of styles and genres that creates a whole new energy. When that energy is captured in the structure of a song, that’s when we are able to create something truly special.

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

Our live show is a party that you’re all invited to! Haha! Seriously though, when you combine the energy, sound and volume of metal and hardcore rap, you’re in for a sweaty, loud and unpredictable show. I think people who are open to something a little different, should definitely come check Def Goldblum out.

Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?

None of us have ever been to Bloodstock before.

Did you enter M2TM thinking you could win it?

We didn’t even think we’d get through the first heat!

Which region did you win, or did you come through other channels?

We got the wildcard spot from the Manchester M2TM finals, even though we live in Nottingham! We entered the competition pretty blindly, not realising that there were local heats!

What sort of setlist can we expect?

We set the tone pretty quickly, a good high energy opener, then we ramp it up from there!

Which other bands do you most hope you’re not squished up next to so you can see them play?

That’s an impossible question, there is an unbelievable amount of quality bands playing across the entire festival and we’d love to see them all! However, Barbarian Hermit, who won the Manchester finals, and are playing on the New Blood stage, are definitely a must-see band! Hot tip for y’all!

What are you working on at the moment?

We’re recording an EP which will be out soon. Other than that, it’s rehearsal, rehearsal, rehearsal…

Jager, Hobgoblin Ale, Red Bull, Kingstone Press Cider, Kaltenberg Beer or Bulleit Bourbon? And, yes, we’ll be counting all the votes!

Hobgoblin!
