#RoadToWildfire2018 – Mason Hill

Much like we endeavour every year before Bloodstock, this year, for Scotland’s Wildfire Festival which kicks off on 22nd June, we’re interviewing every band set to play the stages of Wiston. You get to hear (or read) right from the horse’s mouth who you should be watching over the course of the weekend.

Previous years have seen some excellent acts grace the stages as our reviews can attest to and trust us when we say this year is no different! So get reading and listening so you can plan your coffee/beer/food breaks accordingly…

Our thanks to all the bands for taking the time out to answer our questions!

Mason Hill

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Glasgow.

How long have you been playing together as a band?

As you see the line up today, since February 2016.

Where does the name of the band come from?

James: The name came from a night out at the Solid Rock in Glasgow after months and months of not being able to come up with a name for the new project myself and Scott had started. Scott said “Right, the name will be in this newspaper” which was on the table so he turned a few pages and came across an article about someone called Dr. Mason and on the next page something about a hill. He then said out loud “Mason Hill” and we just sort of said “Yeah, why not!”

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

James: The music people have mostly heard since the band began has been very classic rock influenced but as time has gone by I’ve made new songs that sound much more modern with a great balance of heaviness to slower songs. There’s a good handful of songs that, in my opinion, are just going to really take us to the next level upon release but won’t be out for a while! You can tell it’s the same band but it’s taken some changes.

What’s your live show like? Why should people watch you?

Craig: It’s high impact, high energy as well as atmospheric and dynamic.

How does it feel to be returning to Wildfire?

James: It feels great. We played in 2015 on stage 2, since then we’ve managed to build ourselves up in Glasgow, not too far from Wildfire which has allowed us to return with a co-headline slot which is really awesome. Very excited for it.

What sort of setlist can we expect?

James: A mixture of the EP songs and brand new songs, some of which have been played here and there at the odd show but we’ll really be adding quite a few new songs into the set this time.

Which band are you most looking forward to seeing?

Craig: It will be great to see the guys from Deever again since they came out on tour with us back in December.

2017 was an incredible year for the band. What was the highlight?

James: Being at Download amongst many other things was cool and all but to be honest, selling out our first ever headline show in Glasgow at the Cathouse was a massive buzz which I won’t forget.

Your upcoming King Tut’s gig sold out in record time, are there any nerves about playing such an iconic venue?

James: The venue doesn’t phase me but I am a tiny bit nervous to play again as it’s the first gig of the year for Mason Hill since December, but its only nerves from excitement and anticipation. It’s going to be an awesome show, I know that much.

What have you got planned for the second half of 2018?

James: Most likely a tour, and a couple shows at some cool events like Rockingham, Planet Rock stock and so on.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Craig: We were playing a gig down south a long time ago near Liverpool and the stage was on a really steep slope, I just remember holding on to my snare and leaning forward the whole show to make sure I didn’t slide off the back of the stage, I also remember Scott turning round to me during a guitar solo and not being able to stop himself running into the kit.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

James: Not sure about the opening band but I’d love to tour with someone big to get an insight into the world of someone like Aerosmith. I think that would be very cool to be around never mind the playing side of it!

What day/time are you playing at Wildfire? (If you have your slot yet!)
James: Last band to play on Friday.

Pistonhead Lager, Cloven Hoof rum or Thistly Cross cider? And yes, we’ll be counting the votes!

James: I’ve never tried any of them, to be honest! But I’ve heard great things about Cloven Hoof Rum so that’s my pick! I’ll be trying it at Download so hopefully it won’t let me down now I’ve voted.
