As ever, we’re going to try and cover every single Jäger, New Blood and SOPHIE stage band before Bloodstock kicks off on August 10th. Your chance to check them out and start planning which bands to get there early for!
Trust us when we tell you that this is bound to result in some frustrating clashes because, as ever, there are some great bands on these three stages.
Our thanks to all the bands for taking the time out to answer our questions!
Malum Sky – Hobgoblin New Blood Stage, Saturday
Simple things first – Where are you guys from?
South Wales – Cardiff (Mike, Saki, Joe), Bridgend (Jon), and Swansea (Ben).
How long have you been playing together as a band?
The current line-up is nearly a year strong, but some of us have played together in previous bands also.
Where does the name of the band come from?
Malum is from the Latin meaning “evil” or “wrongdoing”. The name “Malum Sky” represents the idea that there is beauty in dark things, like our world, which is kind of ugly and beautiful at the same time.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
Our music will take you on an emotional roller-coaster to lots of different places, we’ll smash your face in whilst stroking you gently! Each song is a journey that has roads mapped out by each of us and the result is thoughtful, technical metal, with a shot of pure adrenaline running through the centre. Energy & unity.
What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?
Our live show is very energetic, very intense, very passionate. We are all running at 1000% and pushing for that connection with our audience, trying to make every show one to remember. We are five very different guys, from different worlds, but when we get together as Malum Sky something happens, and a sixth person is born! We’ll be giving birth to triplets on stage at Bloodstock this year, representing South Wales!
Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?
Yes! Absolutely brilliant! Lamb of God headlined that year and the place just exploded! Festivals are fantastic simply because you will seldom encounter so many like-minded people in one place at one time. Bloodstock is like metal utopia for a whole weekend!
Did you enter M2TM thinking you could win it? Which region did you win?
Not at all. It started as one gig, which turned into more gigs, until we found ourselves in the final fighting for something we all wanted! The scene here in Cardiff is fantastic and M2TM really pulled the community together. All the bands gave 100% throughout the competition and we are honoured to have won the South Wales region finals.
What sort of setlist can we expect?
Something new and interesting that will set us apart on the New Blood stage. Possibly a new song or two from our upcoming EP. Our irresistible energy and drive, in your face.
Which main stage band do you most hope you’re not squished up next to so you can see them play?
We do have big Megadeth, Soilwork, and Havok fans in this band. I think we’re ok for catching their sets!!
What are you working on at the moment?
We are working on our new EP at the moment, and aiming to have it ready before the end of the year. It’s a lot of work because we are recording and producing it ourselves at our home studios. It’s going very well and we are very excited to share the new songs.
Jäger, Hobgoblin Ale, Kraken, Kingstone Press Cider, Kaltenberg Beer or Bulleit Bourbon? And, yes, we’ll be counting all the votes!
Hobgoblin Ale!
