A – Z Interview: Homebound

Pop-punk quartet Homebound have been laying down their unique sound since 2013, constantly evolving throughout that time. Now, in the wake of their third release, The Mould You Built Yourself Around, the band have opened up and revealed what makes them tick in an A-Z interview.

A song which made you want to make music:

Pretty sure it was “By the Way” by Red Hot Chili Peppers. I’d say RHCP were the first ‘proper’ band I became obsessed with.

Best album ever written:

Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park, the best selling album of the 21st Century. Need I say anymore?

Craziest moment you’ve experienced in the band:

Opening for Four Year Strong at Koko in London. Its crazy to think we had gone from playing to a bunch of old geezers in a liberal club in Farnham to Koko in Camden!

Deepest lyrics one of your songs features:

“Wake up before you realise there’s nothing for you to live for” – “Sonder”

Easiest song you wrote:

“Sonder” off our latest release The Mould You Build Yourself Around. It was one of those ideas that came together within the hour of writing the intro. Everything seemed to fall into place nicely with that one.

Favourite show you’ve ever played:

Apart from Koko with Four Year Strong, Surya back in March 2016 was a great show for us. The crowd went off and everyone had a great time.

Guest you’d most like to feature on your record:

Hayley Williams from Paramore. The thought of it gives me chills.

Happiest moment you’ve experienced in the band:

Probably getting the final masters of our latest release. The writing and recording process was so stressful and full of setbacks, it was a great relief when it was completed.

Interesting fact about your members:

Three of us have known each other since we were eleven.

Jokes you have in the band:

Calling Wheats (our guitarist) a crackhead is a new-found favorite of ours.

Kicking off your set is best with which song?

“Worthwhile”. It’s upbeat and hard hitting, feels great to open our set with it.

Longest distance you’ve travelled to play a show:

Leeds to Plymouth in November 2014. We were on a small UK run with Boston Manor. I think the journey was 330 miles or so. All I remember is that it was daylight when we got in the van, but upon arrival in Plymouth it was dark.

Most inspiring musician you’ve ever experienced:

Stephen Carpenter of Deftones. Seeing them at Reading Festival in 2013 was by far one of the best musical experiences I’ve ever had. He just plays with so much feel it is a joy to watch.

New band you’d recommend:

Weatherstate – one of the best bands in the UK right now in my opinion. Check them out.

Opening for this band would be ideal:

Blink-182.

Place you’d most like to tour:

I think collectively as a band, it would be the USA. Maybe one day!

Quote that you’d like to pass on to readers:

“It’s a little stock” – Lars Ulrich

Reason for the title of your recent release:

As our vocalist Charlie said: “The Mould You Build Yourself Around is based on the idea that choosing to be in a band and to pursue music has shaped my morals; what I value in life, my personality, the decisions I make, whether serious or trivial, literally anything and everything. The songs specifically depict scenarios where these issues have come into being and have affected my life and relationships with others.”

See us live at:

We’re going to be touring a lot more this year. Our next show is at the Key Club in Leeds on April 15th.

The old days of music were better than those current; do you agree?

For me personally I would say yes, but of course many people will disagree. I still regularly listen to most of the music of my ‘defining’ years. This is because I hold a great emotional connection to it. Without those artists I would not be the person I am today.

Variations you’d like to do on any of your songs:

I’d love to be able to go back and re-write some of our previous releases, especially the song “Valour”.

What bands have you seen live and regretted?

Can’t say I’ve ever regretted seeing any bands live, to be honest.

X-rays or any other treatments needed for band related injuries:

Somehow we all remain unscathed. Not sure how long that will last!

You could have written any song in history, which would you pick:

“Papercut” by Linkin Park. Certified banger.

Zoo animal that best describes the personality of your band:

A panda. I don’t know why, just seems to fit!
