#ROADTOBOA Interview: Derange

Bloodstock 2016 logoHere we go again… Last year we covered every band on the Hobgoblin New Blood and Jagermeister stages in the run-up to Bloodstock 2015. This year, we’re going one better and aim to have interviews from all the bands on those two stages as well as all of those on the SOPHIE stage prior to the event kicking off on August 11th. That’s almost 100 interviews to get online for you lucky people over the course of the next couple of weeks. I bloody love this job, but you lot owe me a beer at Catton Hall, right?

Thanks to all the bands who’ve taken the time to respond!

Derange – SOPHIE stage, Sunday

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Joe: We’re based in London and South East England.

How did you meet?

Joe: We all met through University as we were all completing our degrees. Cat founded the band and approached us all individually.

How long have you been playing together as a band?

Joe: We have been together four years this summer!

Where does the name of the band come from?

Cat: I came up with the name. It has no particular meaning, it comes from ‘insane’ and ‘mad’. Guess at the end of the day, it describes our music!

What are your influences – individually or as a band?

Joe: My personal influences are everything from funk and jazz to old school metal such as Iron maiden and Megadeth, and modern metal.

Cat: My first ever influences came from Rock bands such as Nirvana and Oasis, then as time went by, I started exploring other rock and metal genres. I also have a huge passion for avant- garde and experimental pop such as Bjork and Imogen Heap.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Joe: We are unique as we try and put a spin on the typical female fronted metal band stereotype.

Cat: Yeah we definitely don’t fall onto the cliché. We also not afraid to experiment with different sounds and genres, and incorporate them in our music.

What’s your live show like – why should the baying hordes troop over to the stage you’re playing on to watch you?

Joe: Our sets are always high energy and we create our set list to maximise the enjoyment for our crowds.

Cat: Heavy riffs, head banging and lots of energy! People never know what to expect when they come to our shows, and they always have an awesome surprise!

When/how did you find out you’d been selected to play at Bloodstock?

Cat: I got the news from our PR, he messaged me as soon as we were confirmed!

Joe: We got the news early this year. We couldn’t have been more excited with the news!

What sort of setlist can we expect?

Cat: We’ll be playing songs from our debut album The Awakening.

Joe: With maybe a surprise added…

Which main stage band do you most hope you’re not clashing with so you can see them play?

Joe: Symphony X!

Cat: I personally would like to see Heart Of A Coward.

What are you working on at the moment?

Joe: We are working on some new material at the moment for a new release in the not too distant future

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done on tour?

Joe: We once played alongside a band where the singer stuck the microphone up his arse at the end of the set!

Cat: Aaah yeah I remember! Stripped off and gave himself a mangina as well, it was lovely! Great band though!

What advice would you give to a young band just starting out today?

Cat: Remember success doesn’t happen from one day to another. You start from the bottom and build your way up, so don’t get impatient and disheartened. ‘Before you move onto the luxurious en-suites, you gotta play a few dirty toilets’, that’s what we always say!

Joe:  My advice would be to get your chops down, work, be true to yourselves and your sound and network with people!

If you could be part of any 3-band line-up who else would you have on the bill? One band above you and one below – a chance to plug a smaller, unsigned act!

Joe: Tool, Derange and Servant Sun.

Cat: Yeah big shout out to Servant Sun! Toured with them in April and they’re such a good band and a great bunch of guys! If I could choose band above Derange, I’d say Karnivool for sure.

What stage / time are you playing at Bloodstock (if you have your slot yet!)

We’re playing the Sophie Lancaster Stage on Sunday!
