Interview: Jon Davis of Conan

conanFormed in Liverpool using a heavily downtuned and distorted sound the band became established with the Doom Metal genre. Formed in 2006 and being a fan of the band for a long I jumped at the opportunity to talk with vocalist Jon about what drives the band.

How did you form back in 2006?

I was having a shit time and had been in and out of bands. Like a lot of bands I started Conan out of a tiny idea about playing really simple down-tuned music and it grew from there.

What were your influences behind creating the band?

Slomatics / Fu Manchu / High on Fire / Fudge Tunnel.

Why did you chose ‘Conan’ as the name of your band?

That name, and Krull or other cool one word names just seemed to be good name that suited the music we were doing at the time – simple, slow and heavy.

With Conan, there is a lack of modelling effects and samples. Has that always been the way you wanted the band to sound?

We wouldn’t mind using samples but it can get complicated getting permission for them so we don’t do it.

How have you coped with coming out of the underground scene in the UK, playing festivals such as Damnation, and touring Europe?

I don’t think ‘cope’ is the right word as it is not a difficult thing or something that is unpleasant. We have always enjoyed playing live so have always strived to play cool shows all over the world…. It would be difficult to ‘cope’ with not doing these things.

Are there any difficulties that you face such as having a personal life outside of the band?

Well yeah, obviously the more time you spend on the road, the less time you get to do other stuff. However, I knew there would be sacrifices when I decided that I wanted to be in a band and I’m trying to juggle the best I can.

What are your plans for the future?

This year is all about touring, then we can start thinking about a new album.
