This one arrived in our mailbox last year, but got swamped in the usual inbox madness. I also hadn’t really listened to any Noah Kahan at that time so couldn’t have compared it to the original anyway. Fast forward eleven months and I finally got round to listening to it when I rediscovered the email while arranging (hopefully) our coverage of a certain singer/songwriter playing Hyde Park this year…
Knuckle Puck have done with “Stick Season” pretty much what you’d expect – pop punked it up. And it works. Somewhat more up tempo, the pacing is otherwise the same but with added twangy guitars. In parts this makes the lyrics come across more “pissed off” than “soulful and sad”. It’s interesting how the portrayal of the same words can be changed with how they’re projected. There are plenty of examples of this in other cover versions, some we’ve written about and some we’ll get to at some point.
A worthy addition to our covers playlists!
