Classic Cover: Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators – Rocket Man (original by Elton John)

As Disney Plus takes a brief break from feeding us more MCU content than we can keep up with and we get ready to don our Mandalorian helmets once more, they’ve found space to release Stuntman, a documentary detailing Eddie Braun’s attempt to recreate Evel Knievel’s Snake River Canyon jump.

More importantly, the general release of the film has given us the chance to finally hear Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators’ version of “Rocket Man”, something which had been teased several years ago at this point. Albeit, the only version around at the moment is a truncated version of the Elton John classic on YouTube and not (yet) on your DSP of choice, it’s a wonderful version, paying tribute to the original whilst putting the Conspirators spin on it.

As Kennedy hits the lower end of his register for the opening, those famous highs are still there where it counts. Of course, the most obvious omission is the lack of keys but in its stead is Slash doing what he does best with a bluesy, soulful interpretation on six strings and owns it as if it were his own, backed by subtle moves from the Conspirators (Todd Kerns, Brent Fitz and Frank Sidoris). It may only be half the length of the original but they manage to hit the parts you’ll remember off the top of your head.

Whether we’ll ever hear a full-blown version, or if this version will even come to streaming platforms is anyone’s guess given this was recorded some time ago. Of course, since both Slash and Elton John featured on Ozzy Osbourne’s “Ordinary Man” last year, maybe they can combine forces for a new collaborative version.
