Classic Covers: Handsome Young Ladies – Bennie and the Jets

It’s been a while since we ran one of these features, but I just had to throw a few words together once I’d watched the video for Handsome Young Ladies’ version of the Elton John classic “Bennie and the Jets”. Taking what was a slow and ploddy (in a nice way) original, and making it a touch heavier has worked brilliantly. Singer Sam Swanson has a great voice which doesn’t sound like Elton’s which makes the cover all the better, and more HYL’s own.

The video itself is pretty quirky, but it’s the music that’s the star and it’s well worth five minutes of your time to give it a listen. FYI, courtesy of Wikipedia:

The track is spelled Benny on the sleeve of the single and in the track listing of the album, but Bennie on the album vinyl disc label.

“Bennie and the Jets” is one track from the band’s forthcoming We Got It Covered album (May 17th) which features 11 classic tracks being given the HYL treatment:

  1. September (Earth Wind & Fire)
  2. Everybody Wants To Rule The World (Tears For Fears)
  3. Smooth Operator (Sade)
  4. Another One Bites The Dust (Queen)
  5. Rock With You (Michael Jackson)
  6. The Sign (Ace of Base)
  7. Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper)
  8. Roxanne (The Police)
  9. Love Fool (The Cardigans)
  10. Holiday (Madonna)
  11. Bennie And The Jets (Elton John)

The album is available to pre-order on vinyl and digital formats.
