A Beach Boys cover that Brian Wilson would, I’m sure, approve of – A7X have taken the pop classic and moulded their own version complete with a video that suits the tune perfectly. Slightly more ethereal than the original ballad, Shadows and the boys have turned in a genuinely original take.
“God Only Knows” is the fifth track the band have released to “expand” their recent album The Stage. First came their rendition of Mexican folk song “Malagueña Salerosa” followed by a unique version of Mr. Bungle’s “Retrovertigo”, and original track “Dose”. Next came their cover of Del Shannon’s 1961 No. 1 hit, “Runaway”, featuring a guest appearance by Vandals’ guitarist Warren Fitzgerald and lead vocals by Avenged Sevenfold guitarist Zacky Vengeance… and now this version of the 1966 track “God Only Knows”.
M. Shadows said this about the song:
Of all these new songs we’ve recorded, this one was the most difficult in terms of figuring out an arrangement. Figuring out the middle vocal melodies was also challenging. We wanted to make the song a little darker by adding a flanger and some haunting vocal nuances. The Beach Boys have always been an influence, so it was fun to tackle this one from arguably the best album of all time, Pet Sounds.
