Classic Covers: GWAR – West End Girls

Pet Shop Boys - West End GirlsDo I really need to go any further with this than the title and the embedded video? OK, OK…

The Pet Shop are a British band from the 80’s who are surprisingly still popular in a retro kind of way. In fairness, they were pretty good in their day – better than a lot of the manufactured boy bands who still sell out arena venues to screaming middle-aged women. The PSB’s seem to sell out to crowds of screaming middle-aged men…

GWAR are a brutal thrash band formed of aliens who want to kill every living creature in the universe.

Obviously the latter should cover the former (though I’d not put it past the Pet Shop Boys to return the favour if challenged). There are a few live videos on YouTube, but this tidier version comes courtesy of Laughing Squid / A.V. Club. The latter invite bands in for interviews and stuff and hand them a list of songs. The band picks a track and covers it, crossing it from the list. As bands continue to come in, therefore, their choice of songs to cover becomes more limited.

Given the quality of the music, I’d be surprised if GWAR didn’t pick this as one they already knew or at least had time to rehearse. Mind, who gives a shit? It’s a great cover of a classic pop track from the 1980’s. A Classic Cover in all senses.
