Headline Act: Mally and The Hayburners

Mally and the Hayburners dropped their most recent single a few days ago, and they’re here to tell you to listen to it (by scrolling down). They’re also here to tell you more about themselves!

Where are you guys from?

Norwich, UK

How did you meet?

Tom Mally and Luke Roche teamed up quite a few years ago as an acoustic duo. Just  working around the pubs and busking.

Luke got fed up playing the box drum and want to get back on his acoustic drum kit. So  we went looking for a bass player and we found Matt bass player extraordinaire and then  Simon came around after that.

Where does the band name come from?

The songs always originated from Tom’s lyrics so we used his name ‘Mally’ and the  Hayburners part just flowed!

What are your influences?

Ray Lamontagne, Bob Dylan, The Black Keys, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, The Main Squeeze, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Nightsweats and The Cadillac Three. To name a few

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

All our songs feel chocca with heartfelt, honest lyrics from Tom with a huge old school rasp to his voice. Blended with the band you get raw, foot stomping folk and blues rhythms with infectious guitar hooks throughout the music.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Lyrically I like to take inspiration from my surroundings and my life. If that’s work or being a father or husband… there’s a lot to draw from

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Our live shows are electric. We’re like four brothers playing on stage together having a good time. We have many gigs under our belt, but the one that stands out the most is  headlining Folk in a Field Festival a few years ago

In 2023 we played festivals: Red Rooster, Beardy Folk and closed the festival at Folk in a Field.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a festival?

Without a doubt it has to be seeing Bob Log the Third at Red Rooster in 2024, we won’t  say much but what we will say is there was storming three sting blues, an inflatable dinghy, Champagne and toast.

What kit do you use/play?

Tom Mally:

  • Faith 6-string acoustic guitar
  • Epiphone drop electric guitar
  • My  cigar box guitars handmade by Chipstick Cigar Box Guitars to bring that bit of blues and  roots to the show

Simon:

  • Guitars Gretsch 5442 Hollow Body
  • Fender Mexican Strat

Matt:

  • Fretless Aria 4 string bass, boss pedals

Luke:

  • Istanbul cymbals, Vic firth 5a sticks

What if anything are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

Our latest two track single release with Catch21 records called “Good for Nothing”. Check  it out, it’s huge!

What are your plans for the next 6 months or so?

Right now we’re plugging our new release “Good for Nothing” and celebrating the launch.  We’re looking forward to getting and some festival line ups over the summer and playing  some shows around the country.

If you were second on a three-band bill which band would you love to be supporting and  which band would you choose to open for you?

That’s a hard question because there’s so many bands and artists that I’d love for us to  support, but one springs to mind. I would love for us to support Ray Lamontagne.
