With their new album and single released yesterday (check out Nurse Corkscrew on the streaming sites now!), what better time to find out about Bobbie Peru?
Simple things first – where are you from?
Manchester – home of rain, legendary music, and questionable takeaways.
Who’s all in the band?
It’s all about the collective chaos of:
- Bert Genovese – Guitar / Vocals
- Simon ‘Ding’ Archer – Bass / Vocals / Synths
- Mike Baker – Drums / Vocals
Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?
It’s nicked from a dodgy character in David Lynch’s Wild at Heart – Bobbie Peru. He’s a sleazy, unsettling weirdo, and that just felt… right.
What are your influences?
A glorious mess of bands that all bring something different to the table: Killing Joke for their raw intensity, Dead Kennedys for their bite, Devo for their weirdness, Fugazi for their tension, Sonic Youth for the noise, Pixies for the hooks, and The Fall because, well, it’s The Fall.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
We don’t really write songs in the traditional sense – each of us plays what feels right, and eventually, it all locks into place. It’s a bit like controlled chaos, but with just enough structure to hold it together. The result? Something loud, jagged, and unpredictable, but with a groove that keeps you hooked.
Do you have any particular lyrical themes?
Not really – nothing planned, anyway. It’s more like a stream of consciousness. A riff starts, words get thrown over the top, something sticks, and then we shape it from there. It could be about paranoia, existential dread, or just the last thing we saw on the news. The best lyrics tend to write themselves in the moment.
What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?
Loud. Unhinged. Sweaty. Sometimes things fall apart in the best way possible. We don’t do polished – we do energy. Over the years, we’ve played a ton of shows, sharing the stage with legends like Black Francis, The Fall, and Spear of Destiny. That kind of chaos leaves a mark.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
Honestly, nothing too out there – no pyrotechnics gone wrong or stage invasions (yet). Most of our gigs have been pretty straight-up, though there have been a fair few “oh shit” moments when something goes off the rails mid-song. The occasional gear failure, wrong chord, or total wipeout just adds to the fun.
What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?
We keep it solid and no-nonsense:
- Guitars: Gibson Sonex, Yamaha SG – built to take a beating.
- Bass: Fender P-Bass – because it does the job and then some.
- Drums: Premier – because if it ain’t loud, what’s the point?
What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?
Our new album, Nurse Corkscrew, is out on Friday, March 14th. It’s a noisy, off-kilter, in-your-face record, and we’re stoked for people to hear it. Expect fuzz, tension, and some properly twisted riffs.
What are your plans for the next six months or so?
Push the album, play as many gigs as possible, and make some noise. Maybe break some gear in the process. The usual.
If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to support, and which band would you choose to open for you?
Supporting The Jesus Lizard would be a dream – feral energy, total chaos, just our kind of thing. And we’d have our mate Slim Francis open because the guy absolutely rips. Plus, we owe him a pint.
