Please buy Matt’s stuff so he doesn’t have to go on OnlyFans. Unless you want him on OnlyFans, but we think that says more about you than him. We’ll let the man himself explain…
Simple things first – where are you from?
Born in Oxford, ruined in London, now live in Brighton.
How long have you been playing as a solo act?
I’ve been solo since 2008, which is much too long. Was in a band before, and am currently working with a drummer and (maybe) a new bassist – one day we hope to reinvent the wheel.
What are your influences?
The Velvet Underground, The Fall, krautrock, faceless acid techno.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
It’s a venting of ugly and difficult emotions against a backdrop of loud guitars playing hypnotic patterns, a total psychodrama, and it’s very real. No-one else would be demented or foolish enough to do it the way I do.
Do you have any particular lyrical themes?
Isolation, mental disturbance, and the ghosts and shadows of the past. All the fun stuff.
What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?
I’ve lost count. Played hundreds by now, from full band to solo acoustic to the current noise guitar/drums duo. I’m told the gigs are very exciting, but from the stage it’s all kind of a blur. It’s a catharsis!

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
I once cut my face open (by accident) with a guitar. The support band’s bassist ran onstage and stanched the blood pouring out of my split eyebrow with some paper towels, so I was able to finish the song. Then I just sort of continued with blood dripping everywhere. Again, am told it was pretty memorable – wish I could’ve seen it.
What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?
Fender or Squier Telecasters, Fender amp with a Giygas, which is an evil Catalinbread fuzz pedal.
What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?
The 6-track EP I just put out on Eyeless Records, Bang Bang Exorcism.
What are your plans for the next 6 months or so?
Get out of music and become a sex worker. There’s more dignity in it, and certainly more money. Also, record some more music.
If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting, and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!
Nil By Habit, because they’re great (and performed first aid onstage, as mentioned above), with Nancy Cancer to open.
