I love it when we get a completely new-to-me act (as Madvice) are. Finding out who they are and what they’re up to so often ends up with me digging through their older material and discovering another favourite band. So come digging with me as Asator, Madvice’s vocalist, tell us all about them…
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
We are Italians, we come from different cities far from each other, but currently we all live in Tuscany, some in Pisa, others in Lucca.
How did you meet?
Maddalena and Raffaele (guitar player and bass player) have played together for a long time in many different projects. When they decided to make their style more extreme, they called me as vocalist (thanks to a common friend). After a lot of searching, we found in Marco the right drummer.
How long have you been playing as a band?
Me, Maddalena and Raffaele met in late 2015 to talk about the project. Madvice was officially born in early 2016.
Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?
We were searching for an original name of just one word: we decided to merge two words, mad and advice. So Madvice was born.
What are your influences?
As in any band, everyone has his own musical tastes that inevitably influence the proposed sound. Anyway, we can find our main inspirations in bands like At the Gates, The Haunted, Pantera, Necrophobic and, probably above all, Metallica.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
While making extreme music, we always try not to give up the linearity and listenability of the songs, which must always remain recognizable and distinct from each other. The base could be defined as thrash / death, but the voice is typically black metal, and this probably makes us a little different from typical Scandinavian melodeath bands.
Do you have any particular lyrical themes?
Normally I write the lyrics and they all are about my demons: suffering, death and anti-religion.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?
We played many shows, from early 2018 to late 2019. Unfortunately, our European tour has been interrupted in the middle due to the Covid crisis.
We have a raw style on stage, we don’t care very much about choreography, we are just pain and strength.
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
On our show in Krakow in 2019, we saw a drunk guy in the crowd who took the legs of the lead singer of the band who played before us and brought him to the ground. At that moment I thought, “I hope he doesn’t do the same with me, or I’ll have to kill him!”
What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?
Over time we have resized our equipment a lot, trying to take up as little space as possible when traveling and to be very fast when setting up the stage. And so we ditched the stacks and replaced them with simulators that come in small cases.
Maddalena uses a 7-string Ibanez and Engl pedals, Raffaele plays with a Warwick 5-string and Darkglass Microtubes B7K, Marco always carries a Roland trigger module, and I don’t even leave my house without my Shure Super 55!
What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?
Actually at the moment we are just focused on writing new songs.
What are your plans for the next 6 months or so?
The time would be right to come up with another album, we almost have the entire material and we like it so much. But for us it makes no sense to release a record if you can’t play it live, so we’ll wait a little longer, hoping to start seeing some light at the end of this tunnel called Covid.
Don’t fancy Patreon? Buy us a one-off beverage!
If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!
We would like to support bands like Necrophobic, At the Gates or Dark Tranquillity and we would like to have our brothers The MothMan Curse as opening band!
