Incinery have been on these pages quite a few times, but we’ve never really sat down and found out the basics about them in text format! Ricky had a video chat with them last year if you want to check that out for further details. So let’s find out where they came from and where they’re going as 2021 opens its scary doors…
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
We’re a Nottingham based band, the majority of use are from Nottingham with the exception of the David (bass) who is a from a little further out.
How did you meet?
Chris and Jason (guitars) knew each other since they were at school. When looking to make the band, we needed a drummer and our school friends brother played drums. So we were introduced. We had previously crossed paths in bands we had played in also. Ste knew James (vocals) from playing the same shows in a previous band so brought him in. Ste also brought his bassist from a previous band but we weren’t his style of music, but he knew someone that would be up for the last. He introduced us to David and the rest is history!
How long have you been playing as a band?
2021 sees the start of our 11th year being together! I’m not sure we would have thought of saying that back when we formed, but we’ve manage to stand the test of time so far probably out of sheer stubbornness!
Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?
The name was just something Jason had kept as an idea cause he liked the sound of it. It was mentioned in the pub and we just decided it worked. It’s nice as a name as it’s not particularly attached to an item or ideal.
What are your influences?
The big influences for us as a group are the thrash guys, mainly Exodus and Testament. However there are also individual influences that get folded in, a lot of more modern bands doing new things like Sylosis or Revocation also slip in. David is a big black metal fan so some of the riffs and sections are inspired by the bands he enjoys.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
At the core we are a thrash band, but we add much more than what is typically found within the genre. Other elements from death and black metal can be found and even some hardcore stuff which helps to mix it up a bit and make it slightly more progressive. We’re a mix of being riff focused and how a song feels overall with push and pull elements. It adds enough to make our music recognisable and have sonic signature that is inherent to us.
Do you have any particular lyrical themes?
A lot of the lyrics are inspired by literature or pieces of art. Lovecraftian themes are often something that appears in the lyrics, but there are also random themes like aliens, because why not! We tend to steer clear of things like politics or religion as they are fairly typical topics in metal music.
What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?
It’s difficult to say how many shows we’ve played, never really counted! But it will be on the hundreds after an 11 year period. Our shows are usually pretty fast paced and intense, a lot of movement and usually quick transitions in between songs. We occasionally have something a little slower in tempo as a breather for us and the crowd! We have a lot of material so fitting into a specific time slot can sometimes be challenging.
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
Oh, we’ve had a few moments. Chainmail-wearing Santa Claus, random inflatable dinghy going around in the mosh pit and people doing push-ups in the middle of mosh pits. You often see odd things than make you double back and smile. We’ve also had someone just get their junk out, which was an experience to see.
What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?
Ste mainly plays on Pearl drum shells and Paiste cymbals, Chris uses ESP guitars and the Kemper profiler for live playing as its sounds good and is very convenient. Jason uses Schecter guitars which he plays through an EVH 5150III, They both prefer the Superstrat style of guitars, it’s the style they have used for years. David uses a hefty Schecter Hellraiser bass which complements the guitars nicely and uses an Orange Bass Terror head. James usually goes between mics but favours an SM58 style mic, usually wireless. Other than drums we’ve really downsized the rigs to make traveling a lot easier.
What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?
We’ve not long released our second full album Hollow Earth Theory, so at the moment we are pushing the new material we have created and getting it into the ears of fans, and hopefully making new ones!
What are your plans for the next 6 months or so?
With the current pandemic and what is allowed and not changing all the time it’s pretty tricky to plan anything long term. The main aim is to keep pushing the new material as best we can and when the live scene becomes viable again go out and play stuff out there. We’re really keen to play the new stuff after having it with us internally for so long. Other than that start working on new ideas for the next release.
If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!
We would say the band we would be supporting is Exodus, we’re big fans of them and enjoy every show we’ve seen them at – the energy has always been pretty insane! It would be difficult to pick a band opening for us as there are so many great bands we play with on a regular basis. We would go for Dog Tired. As well as having amazing songs they are really good guys to hang with!
