Band of the Day: Lam

Groove. Funk. Metal. A good combination and something you can look forward to from today’s Band of the Day…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Half of us, Mike Pilat (vocals) and Jimmy Beedham (bass) are based in Warrington UK, George Whalley (drums) and Ben Vickers (guitar) are in Meribel, France

How did you meet?

Mikey and Jimmy met gigging in and around Warrington and first met George during a session at Mikey’s studio a few of years ago. Jimmy and George then went off to play in the French Alps for the winters, where they met Ben.

How long have you been playing as a band?

The band was put together in March 2020 during the pandemic, as a way of filling the time with something productive during the initial lockdown. So really we’re still in our first year.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

The name comes from an entity encountered by Aleister Crowley, which referred to himself as Lam, that was contacted through a magickal ritual known as the Amalantrah Working. The portrait drawn of Lam, after the event, bears a striking resemblance to the modern day ‘Grey’ aliens in popular culture…

What are your influences?

Mr Bungle, Pantera, Meshuggah

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Our music is heavy, dark and a little bit mystical in a way. We’re into mighty riffs, grooves punctuated with big vocals, and tormented sounds. We like to use different ideas from all from all genres of Metal, and are not afraid to try new things – there’s a three piece horn section on the opening track of our forthcoming EP.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

I guess considering our EP was all written during the first wave of the pandemic, whilst not consciously trying to use that as lyrical inspiration, it has definitely come out as a theme regardless.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

We have yet to perform Lam live, but plans are in motion for summer 2021, pandemic permitting. We can promise it’ll be every bit as grotesque as the music J

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

We have a few stories like this, some you probably couldn’t ever publish! One pretty shocking one happened just over a year ago at a bar in The Alps. There was this really drunk guy, who’d be hassling everyone all night, got thrown out of our gig and ran home, grabbed the biggest knife he had, came back and began to threaten people outside the bar, and ended up chasing our bassist down the road! That was an intense one, the drunk guy got a bottle to the head in the end, just before the police turned up

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Vintage Beverley Drums, Istanbul cymbals, Overwater Electric Bass, Gallien Krueger MB Fusion Bass Amp, Fender Strat, Orange Amps

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

We’ve got our debut single ‘Ruin’ coming out on the 14th January 2021, available on all major online platforms, as well as our first EP ‘Liber K’ which comes out on the 11th of February 2021

What are your plans for the next 6 months or so?

We’re currently in the process of recording a second EP, half of that is written already so we’re working on getting that out later in the year, along with some kind of tour, depending on the covid situation of course

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

Would love to support djiants Meshuggah, who wouldn’t! But would be great to have Vildhjarta support us/or us support them, we had a crazy night with them randomly on a boat from Stockholm to Helsinki 8 years ago, it’d be great to do it again ;)
