Band of the Day: Holy Death Trio

Rockin’ it up from the state capital of Texas (and one of the few cities in the UK I’ve actually visited) are today’s BotD…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Austin, Texas

How did you meet?

Through a Craigslist ad surprisingly

How long have you been playing as a band?

A little over a year now so we are fairly new and defiantly in the running for “best new band”

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

We have kind of a sick fascination with death and Santa Muerte.  It just felt quite fitting to go with being a power trio and raised in South Texas.  I’m also obsessed with candles and pagan rituals so the theme fits the band well.  Jon rides motorcycles so Skulls and Santa Muerte are a common theme in that lifestyle.

What are your influences?

Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Hendrix, Rush, Mothership, Funkadelic, Greenlung, Blood Ceremony, The Oh Sees, King Gizzard, Randy Rhodes, Pink Floyd, Selena, Steve Jobs, Wim Hof, Bruce Lee, there are too many to list!

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

High energy heavy rock. I think us bringing that to the stage is what helps us stand out a bit. With a live show it’s about more than just playing the music well.  When it’s a live show it’s also entertainment and that is where I think we do our best. On stage working as hard as we can to bring you the best show we can.

We also mix a lot of different elements of “rock” in our music. You’ll hear ZZ TOP, Motorhead, Uncle Acid, Black Angels, AC DC, etc. inside our music. We try to bring a unique approach by entertaining all sides of heavy rock and not just playing “stoner rock/doom” so let’s just say we stand out on any bill or festival lineup.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

I wouldn’t say particular themes but some are more personal struggles while other might be experiences or people we know.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Holy Death Trio doesn’t half ass anything, we demand the whole ass and our live shows back that up. We do our best to bring you the best live show we can. There will be a lot of energy getting thrown around. Killer guitar solos with a tight and heavy rhythm section mixed together that is guaranteed to blow the brains outta the back of your skull. As far as how many shows no clue. I’m guessing a couple a month for the past year.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Probably when John smashed his guitar on stage for a live stream and somehow nobody got nailed with a shrapnel.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Bass – 94’ made in Japan Fender Jazz Geddy Lee model through a San amp bass driver and big muff into a Mesa 800+ subway and a 8×10 ampeg cab along with a custom Buried 2×12 cab

Guitar – Orange Dual Dark 50 through a 4×12 orange cab

Drums – Vintage 70s double kick Ludwig custom wrapped by Dallas Drums

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

We’re releasing a new single each month and our first music video for our single “Bad Vibrations” dropped on December 9th!  That’s one you really need to checkout to get our vibes.

Don’t fancy Patreon? Buy us a one-off beverage!

What are your plans for the next 6 months or so?

Finish the album and work on some super top secret media content.  Also getting our sync licensing deals in place so you might just end up hearing us on the telle some day.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

The Opening band would be Dayeater cause those guys are such a amazing band and they are so hard to follow that it’s really makes us bring our “A” game. They have really pushed us to take ourselves to the next level as far as live shows go. The lead player Jessie Lee has one hand and he shreds harder than most people I know with two. It’s pretty inspirational to watch.

As far as us supporting… the Great Electric Quest. Those dudes have always been super cool with us along with bringing a amazing live show to the table. Buddy has helped us out a bit and is doing some awesome things at Glory or Death Records.
