First post of the new year and it makes sense that it’s our most regular feature, Band/Act of the Day, that takes pole position for 2021. Thank you, Abby K, for leading the way…
Simple things first – where are you from?
I am from Charlotte, North Carolina.
How did you meet?
I met my band members in various ways. I met my guitarist on Instagram, and I met my drummer through mutual friends.
How long have you been playing as a band?
We have been playing together since March 2019.
Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?
Abby K is just my nickname and my last initial. I have had that idea for a stage name since I first started playing 5 years ago, but just recently got to put it into action.
What are your influences?
I personally am heavily influenced by Lzzy Hale, Lita Ford, and Steve Harris. I think the band itself sounds like a mixture of Queensryche, Lita Ford, and Halestorm.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
Our music is hard rock with a pinch of pop. We want to appeal to a larger audience, so we decided to add a slight pop factor in there to catch the attention of the younger generation.
Do you have any particular lyrical themes?
All of our lyrics tend to be very relatable. For example, everyone has an “It Should Have Been Me” moment, like our first single. Everyone has a toxic relationship story between a partner, family member, or friend, like in “Dirty Love”. I like writing relatable lyrics because it will make the listener feel valued and feel like they are not alone.
What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?
Our live show is awesome! We have played throughout North and South Carolina as well as Maryland, Virginia, and Tennessee. Hopefully, we will be able to play more shows in 2021. I can’t even keep track of how many shows we have played.
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
I am very active on stage, as I am inspired by Nita Strauss. I sometimes get too ahead of myself and I’ll climb out onto the front of the stage monitors and interact with the audience, but I get so wrapped up in the moment that I forget to go back to the mic to sing!
What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?
I always play Schecter! I have an Omen Extreme 5 and an SLS Elite 5.
What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?
I just released my 4th single, I Thought That I Loved You. I am getting ready to release my very first EP, Live From The Playroom. This will be available December 4th on all streaming platforms.
What are your plans for the next 6 months or so?
I am hoping 2021 is a big year for us. We had plans to do our first full tour this past summer, so hopefully, that will work out better in 2021. For now, all we can do is write, rehearse, and get ready.
If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve with, or a mates band we’ve not heard of before!
It is my dream to open for Iron Maiden. If I was headlining, I would have my friends Tough On Friday and Under the Radar.
