Band of the Day: SteelSwarm

Getting fast and loud as the weekend nears, today we head back down under to get our heads (musically) kicked in…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We are from Sydney, Australia!

How did you meet?

Jamie (Bassist) and Myself (Dane – Guitar) were looking for a sick drummer to Prog up our band, which lead to us getting a message by our now percussionist Zac Stewart. Jamie and Myself are brothers and have been playing forever, when Zac came along that is when we synchronized into the Prog unit we are today.

How long have you been playing as a band?

We started off as a thrash band back in 2013, as our skills developed, we were looking into making something more to match our skill levels.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

We make the STEEL (music) and the audience is the SWARM.

What are your influences?

Jamie and I started off on Metallica and Megadeth leading into Dream theatre, Born of Osiris, TesseracT, Animals as Leaders. Zac is more on the Deep Purple, Dream Theatre, Devin Townsend, Gojira, and Lamb of God. So between all of us there is a nice mix.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We add frequent time signature changes, variety of vocal styles, guitar and bass tapping as riffs, Roto toms and always changing ideas to keep it interesting.

If you like what we do, consider joining us on Patreon for as little as £1 per month!

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Most of our songs revolve around all the negatives that being a human can produce, which is why our debut album is called Aspects of Dissonance.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

We have played 50+ shows, our live experience is always changing, but we are all about generating interest on stage with what music skills we are producing and the interesting riffs that we have created.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Wildest thing we have done is probably drop a pick haha.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Dane Simms plays Schecter 7 String Guitars, Jamie Simms plays 5 String Spector Basses and Zac Stewart plays Tama Kit with Roto Toms.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

We are promoting our debut album Aspects of Dissonance, which was releases on August 6th, 2020.

What are your plans for the next 6 months or so?

We want to get back to live shows, but until COVID is a little more certain it is not safe for us or our audience.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

We would love to support Animals as Leaders or Dream Theater and a cool band to open for us would be RED BEE from Sydney Australia.
