Band of the Day: Capulus

Crowd interaction, barbershop quartets and… snails?!

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Tom: We’re from Bournemouth! Originally started out in the Plymouth area, but we met Alex and Giac and formed this definitive lineup in Bournemouth.

How did you meet?

Josh: Tom and I have been friends since we were toddlers! Giac and Alex were originally in a band together in Sardinia. Our two worlds collided in Bournemouth!

How long have you been playing as a band?

Tom: We’ve been playing together since late 2018 now, Alex officially joined us in the Autumn of 2020.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

Tom: Josh and I came up with the name when we were in a coffee shop. We were throwing around ideas that we were then translating into Latin. Black Coffee was the last one we were going to try, and this came out as Negrum Capulus. As soon as we saw Capulus, we knew that was the name. It also translates to sword hilt and is a genus of snail!

What are your influences?

Josh: We listen to a lot of Alter Bridge and Avenged Sevenfold, as well as Muse.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Tom: I think our music is unique as it comes from a range of strange influences. For example, I love metal and ska music, Josh comes from a barbershop quartet, Giacomo is really into his percussion and Alex digs her hard rock!

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Josh: Generally the lyrics come from things that we experience in our own personal lives. However, quite often we like to write lyrics that tell a story. We also enjoy lyrics that comment on events that are happening around us.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Tom: Our live shows are very energetic! We want people to move as much as we do. We must have played about 50 shows over the last few years now.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Tom: Josh left his guitar on the stage and joined a mosh pit once!

Josh: I also nearly had a guitar stolen from me whilst I was playing it.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

  • Tom: I play a PRS and a Fender Telecaster through my Marshall JVM 205H.
  • Josh: I also play a PRS through my Marshall JVM 205H, but have a Gibson Les Paul as well.
  • Alex: I play an Ibanez SR Standard with my Mooer Ge250 and Ashdown amp/cab.
  • Giac: I play a Pearl Export kit at the moment

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

Currently we’re pushing our new single “All That I Am”! The bassist of The Hoosiers joined us in the studio to record it and we’re really proud of what we came out with. The track has a dynamic approach, with softer verses and heavier choruses. All coming to an end with a heavy back and forth vocal and strings!

What are your plans over the next six months or so?

Tom: We are going to the studio to record out new EP in early December! This will be released in early 2021, we are planning to push this and play as many shows as physically possible to support the new material.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

Tom: I would love it if we could support Avenged Sevenfold. If we could have our friends over at Trip Wizard open for us it would be amazing! Those guys are awesome live and so down to earth. If we could do a tour with them it would be brilliant!
