Band of the Day: Spoiler

As the days grow short and the temperature drops, we need something to warm us up. This ought to work…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We’re all based relatively close in Essex, UK. Convenient with the current pandemic.

How did you meet?

Chris (Guitars), Jack (Bass) and Danny (Drums) played together in The Dropper’s Neck years back, and had decided to start a new project, which lead to them putting up ads on various different ‘musicians/meet’ type platforms. At the time I (Will) was looking for something new to sink my teeth into so hit them up and not long after that we found our singer Aaron (Vocals). It was actually a pretty organic and easy process all things considered.

How long have you been playing as a band?

That’s a fairly hard question to answer. In my mind the band started when the line up was completed (roughly six months ago with the introduction of Aaron) but we already had plans in the work maybe 6 months before that… but what’s a band without a complete line up if not just a few friends jamming?

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the name come from?

Chris (guitars) came up with it. It just clicked. We all have a very different way to interpret it and meaning behind it. It’s special in a different way to everyone in the band…for me it’s a warning! You don’t know what to expect with this band musically . We’re not afraid to mix it up and we’re going to spoil the listener with our vast palette of different moods and colours.

What are your influences?

We all have very different influences . As far as the modern scene is concerned the only bands we seem to agree on is Alpha Wolf and Crystal Lake . However most of our introduction to Metal was in the early 2000’s with the Nu metal scene with bands like Deftones, Korn and Slipknot, which has played a huge part in our sound.

Describe your music. What makes you unique.

I like to think we’re 70% heavy as balls, 30% whatever the hell we want. If someone has an idea not matter how “out there” it is we’ll always try it, and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
I think that’s what makes us unique; there’s no point going into our music with preconceived notions because chances are you’re wrong. “Spoiler alert, you ain’t got a clue what you’re in for!”

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Our lyrics are very personal. Music is therapy and while using music as a platform to express your political or religious views can be a great way to spread a message, I think if you’re not using it to get out of your own head and progress as a person, you’re kind of missing out on something really beautiful.

Whats your live show like? how many shows have you played?
The bands line up was completed during the pandemic so we’re yet to play live! Unfortunately its going to be a while before we get kicked out of venues for tearing up the stage!

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a show?

I haven’t had a particularly wild moment to talk about, but The Dropper’s Neck lads once played a show supporting a has been rocker from LA who let fireworks off inside a tiny venue. I think they even ended up stealing all of the beer from his rider!

What kit do you have/guitars do you play?

Live both myself and Chris play SubZero Rogue Baritone VI, but recorded on Solar guitars before we found the SubZeros. They’re 30’ scale tuned to double drop D#. Amps & Cab wise, we use a mixture of Orange, Mesa Boogie, Peavy, and PRS both live & in studio. Jack (Bass) plays standard Fender Basses tunes up to drop D#, & also uses Fender Amps & Cabs. Danny (Drums) uses DW Drums, Paiste Cymbals & Tama Snares.

What if anything are plugging/promoting at the moment?

Our debut single “Repress” was released Oct 30 with its accompanying video.

What are your plans for the next 6 months or so?

We’re due to shoot another video for our second single, due for release later this year. After that we’ll be back in the studio working on further singles which may become an EP.

If you could be middle of the bill on any gig, who would you have headline and who would open?

I would love to play with my friends in French Nu Metalcore outfit Mindwake, amazing musicians and really fun dudes to hang out with. Headlining, it would have to be Crystal Lake, although I’m sure I would annoy them all night about stuff like nerdy music questions and anime!
