Band of the Day: SKYND

We popped up a review of SKYND’s latest single recently, and the band followed up by answering our BotD questions…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We are from The Dark Place.

How did you meet?

While I was in Sydney, I found myself at a bush party by the ocean. I noticed a lone figure sitting by himself. I approached him. Father was sitting on a stone near the sea and rocking back and forth. I was really intrigued by this person. I felt like there was something weird about him so I set next to him. We talked, and I felt my soul mirrored, all my inner shadows reflected back to me, with this connection, that existed long before we physically met.

How long have you been playing as a band?

Live, since the end of 2018, but Skynd and Father have been working together since 2016.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

Skynd is my imaginary friend. He introduced himself as such when I saw him for the very first time at 3 years old. He whispered horrible stories in my ears and peeled off my skin to show me what was underneath. Skynd means skinned. Humans literally and metaphorically all have layers surrounding the core of what they are. My music is the same way. You can look at the top superficial layer or peel back the skin and see everything.

What are your influences?

True crime. Real events, things that have happened, things that make you ask “why…?”

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We make sounds that we find pleasing, which means we do not commit ourselves to one particular genre and like to mix different genres together. We write about true crime cases, which is pretty unique and these cases also flow into the musical sound.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

True crime.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

We have played less than 30 shows at this point. A mix between festivals, support slots, and one headline show. We cannot wait to play live again.

The live shows vary based on the situation. We try to bring what Skynd means to everything we do, so we try to make the atmosphere reflect that. We want people to be able to step into the Dark Place for a little while, while they are with us.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

We need to play more shows first before we can answer this question – please feel to circle back on this once we have toured more.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Live, I use a wireless midi controller to help with pitch changes. As for other gear live or in studio, it varies and at least in the studio, is extensive.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

Our new song and video, Columbine. We also just did a new merch drop.

What are your plans for the next 6 months or so?

Writing new songs and making new videos. Creating a new live show for next year

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

We would love to support Marilyn Manson, Korn, or Machine Gun Kelly!
