Watch out – the Canadians have been let near guitars again! This time they’ve formed a bunch called The Jailbirds and we have the details below…
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
We are from the Toronto area of Ontario, Canada!
How did you meet?
Myke and Liam have been playing music together since about 2010, we met Eric on an online ad funny enough!
How long have you been playing as a band?
It’s been about 5 years at this point, always playing and writing!
Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?
Haha. Well, we were all actively trying to think of a band name and one night, Liam dreamt that we were all on a train in the mid west, in the 1800’s. We robbed the train, got caught, and was thrown in jail. While in our cell together, the warden walked by and said to the guard on duty: “hey those are The Jailbirds…” and Liam woke up! He wrote it down in his notes and circled it a million times, and then went back to sleep. The next day he told us about it, and we all loved it! So here we are.
What are your influences?
The main ones are Deep Purple, Sabbath, Alter Bridge, GN’R, Cruë, Big Wreck, Soundgarden, Monster Truck, Rival Sons, etc. There’s too many to list! We draw influence from a lot of different places/genres.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
Our music is a unique mix of multiple styles of rock music. We blend classic rock, grunge, modern hard rock, hair metal elements, some pop, and other things to make our music. We don’t really box ourselves in to one sound, whatever we feel sounds good is what we play. As long a it has a guitar solo!
Do you have any particular lyrical themes?
Not particularly, but it tends to end up being about mental health struggles and/or battles with life. We try to write about our personal experiences, as well as have some fictional stories as well. There’s no rules!
What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?
We’ve played over 100 shows together at this point in time. We always do our best, and do everything we can to have a good time up on stage and do the songs justice. The main point for us having fun, and being the best musicians we can be.
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
This one time someone jumped off of the stage into the crowd and we didn’t see him until he was mid-air! That was a fun moment for sure. It’s always nice to have crazy stuff like that happen where you can look back on it and laugh. At the time, it was a little surprising.
What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?
We are partnered with Sheptone Pickups, Morris amps and Samsun Cymbals! We only use gear that we love to play. These products are the best you can buy, and we HIGHLY suggest you look them up! Other than that, Gibson guitars and Yamaha basses for Liam, and Traynor bass amps, Pearl drums as well. We spend a lot of time with our sounds/tones, it’s a huge part of our band.
What are your plans for the next 12 months?
We are in the middle of releasing our 2nd EP, 2 singles out so far (“Watery Grave” and “Dull My Brain”, stream them now on your fav platform!), and are also planning other fun content in the meantime! I unfortunately can’t say too much, as some things are still in the works… Lets just say it’s not all new music and videos! Follow us on Twitch, we’re starting to do more live streams and will be focusing more on that starting now.
If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!
Without a doubt, opening for Guns N’ Roses would be a dream come true to say the least. I mean, we could say that about a lot of bands, it would be a dream to open for Monster Truck, Rival Sons or any of those bands as well… as we love them so much!
We’d also love to have our buddies in Revive The Rose open for us at this hypothetical show, they’re a local band from the Niagara region of Ontario and their some of our good friends, and they’re SICK!
