Band of the Day: Magnolia Bayou

It’s the perfect time to kick back, relax and let your foot tap to some quality rock n’ roll. And do we have the band for you…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

As south as you can get in Mississippi. Gulfport, Mississippi.

How did you meet?

I met Dylan Palmiero in jazz band in high school along with our former drummer my senior year and started hanging out with them after class. Before too long, We were jammin’ out of school and realized we needed some vocals in the band and got Drew on board with it.

How long have you been playing as a band?

Just over 5 years now.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

We wanted a name that really describes where we come from.

What are your influences?

  • Led Zeppelin
  • Pink Floyd
  • Chris Stapleton

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

It’s Mississippi rock and roll! You can almost taste where we come from in our music. It bleeds over a stray genres.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

To be vague, overcoming. You can hear it both literally and figuratively. In the way the lyrics present themselves and the way the band presents the lyrics.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Our live shows are high energy and in your face which you can feel from both the band and the crowd. I couldn’t keep track of how many shows I’ve played. I’m just grateful for every time I do.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

One of the wildest things was going out to Idaho and playing a festival opening for Whiskey Myers. Then the next day they asked us to play another set because one of their bands dropped out. I remember going back up on that stage an winging a whole new set and people chanting “one more day.”

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

  • 610 Ampeg bass cabinet
  • Aguilar Tonehammer 500
  • Epiphone Thunderbird
  • Fender P-bass

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

We just released our sophomore album and it’s something fresh to listen to. I’m so grateful for all the people who have helped this become a reality.

What are your plans for the next 6 months or so?

The next 6 months I hope to get back on the road and do what I love.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

  • Black Crowes
  • Magnolia Bayou
  • Red Clay Strays
